Airports- A Simple Way to Inject/Extract Liquids/Gases From Sealed Jars/Bags 1

hi, yer old friend Hippie here. Just wanted to share something that's catching on over at mycotopia.net
a simple way to convert an empty syringe into an effective filter for air to equalize pressure in sealed jars/bags neutralizing the partial vacuum formed by sterilization or the removal of fluid from a liquid culture jar. see http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=5245 for the original thread info. here's some pix-
ok, that's how to make the airport itself, just pc it once to sterilize the interior and it will filter air that passes thru it thereafter.
now how to use it on a jar of spore water or a liquid culture- the lid is prepared thusly-
one can use this even to inject nutes/spores/air into sealed bottles of distilled water, sport drinks, etc. as needed. many possible uses. also see http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=5177 and http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=5001 and http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=5212
here's how to use the airport to bubble air into a liquid culture to increase dissolved gases and boost growth.
Quote:
I made a lid. i put 4 holes in it then put silicone over holes on both sides and allowed to dry for 24 hours. I then made my syringes i took a bunch of polyfil and stuffed it into 2 syringes and packed it down to make the filters then i took 1 syringe and siliconed an air tube into it to automat the process instead of blowing on one end(it makes it easier when bubbling the solution later) and i let it sit for 48 hours to totally let it dry it wasn't totally dry after 24 hours.
I started my LC by using a 250ml jar, i put 100ml water in the jar and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. i then put the lid on the jar seal side down b/c i want the jar to have a tight seal but left the ring loose on the jar. PC at 15 P.S.I. for 30 min then after PC i released the pressure from my cooker by the release valve and while hot i tightened the ring to keep seal. let cool. i then took a cotton swab with alcohol on it and put it over the hole and pierced it with one of the syringes to kill the vacuum in jar(or else it will suck all your spore syringe into the jar). i then used the same cotton swab and pierce through the silicone with my spore syringe. and allowed to grow. every 4 days i would stick my 2 syringes in to the holes. i put the non airtube syringe in first then the airtube one tipped the jar on its side and turned the pump on. the reason i like the air pump is that you can watch it bubble through the solution but also make sure you don't blow any into the other syringe.
i'm sure y'all can figure out where to go from here. enjoy. peace & love -hip

here's a link- http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?p=194953 to a thread demonstrating how to use the airport system to turn a store-bought un-opened bottle of fruitwater into a liquid culture, in this case a 2 yr old syringe of mexA was used wuth success, now have some ~60 syringefuls that can by syphoned out for use simply by inserting an airport and an empty clean syringe in the silicon ports.

btw i'd request that if you like this idea plz bump up my rating here, some have trolled me in the past, knocking it down. i'd like my 5 shroom rating back, someday... thx in advance.

I have done something like that with LC's for a long time & it does work very well. I just use rubber tubing & rtv gasket sealer to seal the tubing into the lids.

Agars jars work well but if you have say 20 jars on the go then you need 20 caps to be built. Using filtered syringes you simply poke 2 holes in each cap and but a blob of silicone on them. Then use just the one filtered syringe. I put bleach in my syringe and squirt it through the filter before putting it in my jar.

I just use one of these uncommon items (Socorex auto-loading syringe). Slide the feed tube into a LC rubber tube, agitate jar & pump away. Makes it EASY as eating pie, to inoculate 40 or 50 spawn bags, or jars - at one setting.

Sun Tea jars (half & 1 gallon) can also be modified for LC's. Simply alter the lid, remove spigot & replace with an injection port.

true enough, hard to get much simpler/easier/cheaper than stuffing an old syringe with polyfil, poking a hole in a lid with an icepick and applying a blob of silicon adhesive. that's it, do it for a penny a jar, nothing permanent so jars can be stacked anywhere. lay jar on side, upside down- matters not. shake a LC until the tissue fragments, no need for glass or magnets. but one big advantage- you can place the silicon on a plastic bottle never opening it and slide the needle in to inoculate. you could inject apple juice into a gallon jug of distilled water, right from the unopened jar of juice to the unopened jug of water to create a nutrient solution then inject a few spores- voila! a heat-free flowhood-less way to make a gallon of liquid inoculant at a time for mere pennies in just a few minutes wih very few supplies needed.

permanent endless supply of sterlie air sometimes one needs a source of sterile air. here's a simple way. quart jar fitted with twin silicon ported lid about 1/2 inch of water in bottom run the pc to sterilize insides then place airport in one hole to equalize pressure. empty syringe inserted thru other hole can then be filled with sterile air as needed. the polyfil syringe will filter replacement air maintaining equal pressure

Heres an airport I made.

Its an air valve from the plumbing section that was a hell of a tight fit but threaded onto a polyfilled syringe so that the airpump plugs right into it.
I Pc my airports everytime I use them is this necessary?
