Printing Hawaiians
    #4677796 - 09/18/05 02:12 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Anyone with Hawaiian experience have any suggestions for getting better prints from these caps? I am already beginning to think that these yellow gilled (spore less) caps are just the nature of the beast. Appreciate any input.

Yeah there PESH. I usually just see them called Hawaiians. Defiantly a cubie. Defiantly poor spoor producer. Although not a bad strain for other characteristics

I don't know about that...I've never had a problem printing them.

So you never had yellow gilled spore less caps?

are you trying to take a print off an already open cap?

If you wait till the cap opens completely to take a print, the gills may look like there are no spores. On the contrary, there are many spores still within the gills. To make an optimal sporeprint however, you would want to pick the mushroom BEFORE the veil tears, tear it yourself and place it on foil/paper/etc. This way you get all the spores.

That doesn't work these are late maturer's. That is when they mature at all. Some don't just look like they have no spores, they just don't produce any.

the yellow gilled spore-less caps mean that they're just premature. if you take one of these caps and wait for 2 to 3 days they will eventually mature and spores will come. i have printed Hawaiians before. Just put it on foil and cover it with a cup and wait 2 to 3 days instead of the usual day like most people say

or maybe you missed the spores. is there black powder at any of the stems bases or under the caps or where the veil tore off? blackness not to be confused with brusing now.

I've really tried all of this. I guess I was just wondering if anyone had similar experiences and if this was a strain characteristic with a propensity to produce sterile caps.

This post is a little old, but I became curious about the same phenomenon.

I, on the other hand, do have a picture of this variant.
This picture is of the golden teacher strain. These mushrooms were taken off of the same multispore inoculated 60/40 cased wild bird seed tray. I have been noticing a few of these popping up. No matter how long you wait, they do not produce spores. They seem to be... "sterile". They are definitely mature, and most of the GTs seem to be producing spores long before their veil is broken. I really wish I would have taken a clone of the sterile variant before I dried them, I would love to see if the whole tray produced from the clone were all spore-less.
The mushroom on the left was vigorously producing spores, the right produced non at all.

I have heard from several sources that PESH and GT may either be the same strain or have similar origins.

Here is what PF had to say about it.
