Instead of using Dry-rid (Anhydrous calcium chloride), can you use stuff that dries up oil spills and stuff like that? Thanks

Use Epsom Salts. They are cheap as hell and readily available at any drug store. Throw em on a cookie sheet and bake them @ 400F for about an hour. Instant, reusable, and cheap desicant(sp?).

Papasmurf - ever read the warning lables on the back of those? I once wondered the same thing, then looked at the back of the package.

Probably not a good idea to use that stuff for oil spillages since it's full of highly dangerous chemicals and it's just not worth the risk.
I'm still looking for a really good, really quick way to dry 'em. I've tried using beads of silica gel: just find a small bowl, lay the shrooms in the bowl and put the bowl in a foiled-lined tupperware tub that's got some silica gel in the bottom. Make sure the lid is a tight fit, and they should dry out nicely...
It seems to be working for me, and as long as the shrooms don't touch the silicia gel beads, there's no danger.
On the whole, how long do people find it takes to dry out their mushrooms?

Hmmm,
I have heard, from people in the know, again and again.
The best way to dry is as mr. Mystic1 says, fan, then dessicant.
the dessicant that absorbs WATER.
Can find it in the plumbing section of most hardware stores. Picked up a nice sized
container for about 3 bucks...

Get epsom salts. Bake them for an hour at 400F. Put the shrooms in front of a fan for 12-24 hours. Then put them in a container with the baked epsom salts. Don't let the shrooms touch the epsom salts. Use a wire mesh or something. I have a collendar(sp?) or a strainer that fits inside a tupperware container. I put the shrooms in the strainer then the strainer in the tupperware container that has epsom salts in it. Two days later rock hard preserved shrooms. After they're dried I fill a tea bag with some baked epsom salts and put the bag and shrooms in a glass jar for long term storage.

I have two hepa filters sitting in my closet. I just sit my babys on the exaust and they are dry in about 2-3 days. Then I put them in a baggie with a piece of paper towel and that works fine for me. The filter does two jobs, Keeps contams low and dries my shrooms.

I got this stuff called "damp gone." I lined the inside of tupperware containers with about 1/4-1/2 inch of it, put screen on top of that and the babies on top of that... Within an hour you could feel the bottom of the tupperware getting warm from all of the moisture the dessicant was sucking out.
Basically what this stuff is: reusable dehumidifier/air freshener. There are instructions on the bucket of how to dry it out and reuse it too.... it was about 4 bucks for a 12 oz container of it.... works well and worth it if you ask me. I think you could find it at a Home Depot or Lowes. (I got mine at a local mom & pop Ace's hardware)
Good luck
