Highlighting the importance of air exchange
    #4801431 - 10/13/05 11:16 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I soaked some wild bird seed in water for 24 hours, drained well then loaded it into some jars.

All except for one of the jar lids were drilled with two holes, one small one for inoculation and one about the diameter of a pen.

The bigger of the two holes hole was fitted with a Polyfill filter for air exchange, the smaller hole was covered with electrical tape. I left one jar without the larger hole as an experiment.

They were all covered with foil and pressure cooked for 75 mins, then left to cool and each was inoculated with 5CC of liquid culture.

These were then incubated at 84F, shaken once after 4 days, and this is the result after 9 days -

The jar on the right is obviously the one without the filter, and is showing very slow progress, highlighting just how important air exchange is for mycelium growth.

Thanx Willma. I was surprised myself that there was that much difference, I thought the one without the filter would have grown more than that before slowing down. The growth in it is very evenly distributed, but it seems to have stopped almost completely.

This should be part of the FAQ. Seeing is defiantly believing.

Good idea, as this should also be applied to fruiting..... Care should be taken when just using the fanning method of air exchange for a fruiting chamber, making sure fanning takes place regularly.

I'm sure our intentions are always good. But life likes to conspire against us to shorten the hours we have in a day.

Actually it is the gas exchange not air exchange that makes the difference and believe me there is a difference between the two in mycology. I myself also crack the lids loose during incubation in conjuction with the holes. Nice thread OttO!

Hyphae, do you use polyfill or tyvek, and have you found one or the other to be better overall?

Tyvek for lids.
