i asked the same thing about bedding at pet stores, 1 person said hay works 2 ppl said don't do it just go find some straw, well i found a place online that sells barley straw - http://www.naturalsolutionsetc.com/barley.htm - it's not wheat straw, but i think the differences are minimal. you can also get some wheat straw from dr. bluethumbs, i don't have his homepage handy but check the vendor forurms.

keep the lids closed, they will loosen from the steam anyways.
