A firend of mine recently brought three seprate terrariums to pinning stage just as he had the previous several times and using the exact same procedure that he has used before with no problems. This time in one of the terrariums he noticed small yellowish circles on the sides of some of the caps. Then as the mushrooms matured he realised that these were in fact upturned, open gills growing on top of his mushrooms! Very wierd looking. Any comments or related stories would be very appreciated here...

this phenomenon is called "rosecomb".
Supposedly it is caused by contact with petroleum based chemicals. Literature about button mushroom cultivation also make a connection with the use of certain pesticides.

thanks rosecomb,
yup that is pretty much what it looks like. Except instead of on the side it is really more on top of the cap, it looks like an oval instead of an open oval. Hmmm, not sure why pesticides or petroleum would be on them... i supose my plastic container could be the prob.

Guess from what plastic is made of. If it's some cheap ass plastic, something like a light bulb too close might erode the plastic and release chemicals.
