Bogs, peat moss, and casing

I live in the north. We have acidic soils from pine cover and bogs. Bogs are especially well known for high acidity according to my Dendro class. The top layer of the bogs around here is Sphagnum moss and I from what I understand there is peat moss underneath it. Would it be possible to harvest this moss and use it for casing? How would I sterlize the stuff? My thought is that the high acidity of the moss would be a good thing and its readily available. Let me in on ur thoughts. Thanks.

You would need to heat sterilize it, and treat it with lime to adjust ph. By the time you got done driving out there, wading out into a bog, cutting moss, driving home heat sterilizing it would have made more sense to go to the garden center with $5 and get more peat moss than you know what to do with, already in the bag, and considering that you need to go there to get the lime any way, you might as well buy it.
