Ok...I've got some finch seed with bird kote, some quart jars, a spore syringe and a pressure cooker. Will someone please point me in the direction of a good tek to use here? Or, can I get some advice on the best way to use this finch seed? This is my first attempt growing with finch seed. Thanks bassplayer74

Alrighty! Soak the seed for four hours or so, then strain it - mix it up with 100mls finchseed, 25mls brf/rye, 250 mls verm and 125mls water to make up nice little birdseed cakes - works well and the rye/brf makes it all stick together

Thanks blue, Is there any way I can just make spawn with the seed instead of cakes...I was thinkin I could use the seed kinda like one would use rye grains. I guess what I'm askin is can I just dump some seed and some water in a quart jar and pc it and when it cools innoculate it with my syringe? And when it colonizes, dump it in some trays and case? Will this work and if so how much seed and water should I use per quart jar.....Thanks

I always rinse the bird seed off... I'm assuming you're using Pennington finch seed (bird kote)... I always boil it for 45 minutes or so just to allow the seeds to soften up and absorb water. Next I use a spoon with the slits in it and scoop the seeds out into my jars allowing the water to drain from the seeds first. Sometimes I will do the same thing, but scoop it into a bowl and add a little bit of whole wheat flour or brown rice flour to it to absorb the extra water. After that just pressure cook for 45 minutes or so at 15psi, allow it to cool and then innoculate your jars. If you'd like, after the cakes are colonized put them in a clean plastic ziplock bag and crumble them up, then put that in a container and case with some vermiculite & peat moss. Even a small (1/4 inch) casing layer will improve your yield a good amount : ) I usually put a small layer of perlite in the bottom of my casing containers to absorb the water that collects down there. If you don't feel like making 50/50+ casing mix you could buy some jiffy mix and add a little bit of oyster shells to it, you may want to crush up some perlite and mix in with the jiffy mix also. Jiffy mix tends to mat pretty easy, the perlite usually fixes that problem for me though : ) Good luck, you should do fine just as long as you don't put the bird seed in the jars with too much excess water. Even then, it usually just slows down colonization. Hope that helps some. Another tip is to use filter patches or poly-fil instead of a layer of vermiculite as a filter in your jars. Oh ya, and don't mix flour in with your seeds if you intend on using a quart jar or anything where you're going to need to shake your seed... the flour makes the seed stick togethor really good, heh. Anyway, good luck
