Absolut Rila [Part one: Panaeoli]

Last week a friend of mine and I went to a long planned trip to the Rila mountain. We wandered through magic places looking for magic species, and find quite a few of them. The genus Panaeolus appears to be well presented in the Rila National Park. Unfortunately, most of the photographed species remain unidentified for reasons obvious to the seasoned shroomer: most of them are inactive anyway, and the genus is fairly confusing.
Anyway, here they go:
A small cluster of possible Panaeolus castaneifolius:

An interesting species with a relatively large, slightly irregular cap:

A young fruitbody of Panaeolus semiovatus:

A young, tiny, unidentified Panaeolus:

Another species I couldn't identify:

A suspected P. retirugis:

Panaeolus sphinctrinus or similar:

This one, with a very long and thin stem, growing from tall grass tufts supporting Psilocybe semilanceata and allies:

And this one looking very similar, but with a larger cap and shorter and thicker stem:

That's all for today folks. Stay tuned for part two featuring the inactive Psilocybe species we found.

Hi strl, thought you disappeared there for a while. Very nice pics. I am jealous of your pans. Have you exhausted all possibilities on the old favorites like papilionaceus? Rip those suckers apart for the sake of science. Since I started doing cross-sections life has been different. (Not that many positive ids though). I also want to see these from the underside of the gills. Happy trails.

Hey Wallace, Most pans look really similar from underside the gills (those suckers!). The spores are mostly identical as well.. so I must get myself a decent book on Panaeoli first.. and study more about identification in general, particularly about microscopic observation. I promise much more informative reports next summer/fall. This year's expedition was just a tease
