HPoo: Is there a maximum age?
    #4793981 - 10/12/05 04:57 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Is there an age at which Horse Poo becomes less desireable?

I ask because I saw one person mention they could choose from 1,2,& 3 yr old poo and choose 1 yr old poo. Also, Agar posted a link to an eBay Auction to which Prisoner#1 said "...that used horse poop, even at the listed price it's a ripoff!" The auction says "THIS IS WELL ROTTED HORSE MANURE> IT IS FREE IF YOU BRING YOUR OWN BAGS. IT HAS BEEN STANDING OVER 2 YEARS SO IS READY TO DIG INTO YOUR SOIL."

How old is too old?

If it's aged outdoors and stored completely dry, a very long time. If the poo sits in a pile with moisture and breaks down into a black soil consistency, it's no good at that point.

1, 2 and 3 year old poo is nondescriptive. Is it completely aged and dried, or sitting in a pile composting?

If it looks like dirt, don't waste your time. Soil bad, fiber good. By the sounds of that auction, the stuff they're selling is probably soil like. Just a guess though.

Soil bad, fiber good. Got it. (Honestly, that's super helpful.) Thanks!

No problem. Awhile back, I got a carful of the composted stuff from a neighbor and thought I scored big. Looked like soil, and smelled earthy. Several attempts to spawn grain to it, and nothing so much as showed signs of growth, it really sucked. That's why I say avoid the old composted stuff.

Yea, there's an equestrian center in town and I've contacted them and they're happy to give me poo.  Problem is, a.) I don't have a vehicle and b.) I'm in an apartment, so I have to judge carefully how much I can deal with.  Maybe I'll just get it by the backpack full and ride the bus.  Imagine the dirty looks I'd get.  :tongue2:
