same amount of rye grain as brf

the mmgg says For each 1/2 pint jar mix 2/3 cup vermiculite and 1/4 cup brown rice flour in a mixing bowl. When these ingredients are well mixed, add 1/4 cup of water for each 1/2 pint jar you plan to prepare....but if i'm using rye grain do i use the same amount as i would if i was using brf? what are the differences? i have 1/2 pint jars. also is there some place to read that is as good as mm gg (guide) that tells me how to with rye grain?

I'm still a novice but I do know that if you rye is in flour or powder form, use it the same way as you would brf, but if it is whole grain you need a pressure cooker to sterilize.

got the pressure cooker. but i heard that you dont use verm if using rye grain, just 1/2 rye grain and 1/2 water in each jar
i'm doing 12 jars, so i'm going to do 3 like that and 3 like the brf recipe with verm and 3 with 1/2 water, 1/2 rye grain andvery only on top, we'll see what happens

You're right, you don't need to mix verm. with whole grain rye. Some people use the 1:1 water/rye, others boil thier rye then strain it for 15 min. works well with filter discs,speeds up colonization time because you can shake the jars.

I've heard that straining is a good step. By straining you remove any starches from your grain. If you keep the starches, it can slow down colonization.
