Finding Jars
    #4780909 - 10/10/05 03:58 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I live in the UK and I cannot find any suitable jars over here, the only option seems to be having them shipped from America but being a student I am pretty poor and cannot really afford to do this. Can anyone help me? I really want to have a go at growing but if I can't find jars I'm gonna have to find a reliable dealer instead and thats not really a route I want to go down.

You could use ZipLoc Twist n' Lock plastic containers. Just don't fill more than half way. They can be put in the microwave to pasturize. With popcorn place the lid on loosly and nuke for 3 minutes. I usually cut a small hole in the lid and glue a hepa filter patch on for air exchange.

I did it that way for quite a while and it worked. I use jars now, and use the Ziploc containers as mini fruiting chambers now..

They look really good, I'll have to see if I can find a place that sells them. Thanks.

Here's a couple pics of the container for ya. One used as a spawn jar, another as a fruiting chamber. Notice the little hepa filter patch on top.

Just be sure not to fill more than half way, too much spawn and it will take forever to colonize. If you only fill it 1/3 of the way after the spawn colonizes you can fruit it right out of the jar! Throw some casing mix on top when colonized for best results.

Your spawn jars look great. I've just had a quick look on the internet and they don't seem easily accessable to Brits either, unfortunately. Do you think these might work:

I thought the 0.75 litre might be good. Just an idea. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure, I like the ziploc because of the twist-off lids..  It really could work though, I'd give it a shot if you have no other options.  I've seen mushroom spawn on/in all sorts of things..

They aren't to expensive so I might as well try it. I found some lock and lock boxes that are even cheaper and look pretty good. Might have a go with those as well.
