Hey, For converation sake, I'd like to get some opinions on this video clip.
http://www.wimp.com/laptop/
The clip is about a professor who had his laptop stolen.
He then goes into this long speech about how they've tracked the computer and the various government agencies after this person.
Persoanlly, I think its you're typical teacher speech of "you're in big trouble and we know who you are, but we'll forget everything if you just give it back" speech.
Also, whats the "transponder" that this guy is referring to?

I wasn't listening very closely, but basically he was trying to scare someone into returning the computer. Essentially he was talking about all the ways they were tracing the computer. Of course, after all that tracking, they hadn't caught the thief.
As far all the other stuff about how important the data was, it's probably true. However, it seems to me that unless they catch the thief, the professor was responsible for all the data. If I had it, I would destroy the computer and run. Then instead of the student, all those companies and agency's will be looking for the person who has the responsibility of maintainig the data..HIM.
I also find it ridiculous that if it were that important, the data weren't backed up anywhere.

Yup, sounds like a scare speech. It sound a bit contrived. He dropped too many names of government and law enforcement agencies. I think if those agencies were so heavily involved, they would have taken more immediate action (yanked the thief into a van an beat the shit out of him, just kidding... maybe)

The MAC isn't broadcast past the inner network. The guy who stole most likly knows what he is doing and cleared the hardrive and wrote on it (their is a special way to write onto an HD that computer forensics cannot get previous data.).

There is no mac on the hard drive, just a serial, and it's a bitch to change. And the it is also passed out, past the network.

The first thing that caught my attention was the call from Redmond, the second being the "transponder"
The rest is perfectly plausible... especially considering the state of funding to research in university (companies support research to further their own agenda)
Sounds like the prof is pissed, and that the speach was rehearsed.

The thief, if he/she heard that speech, should copy whatever important information he can off of the laptop, and then ditch it. Burn it, or smash it, or whatever creative method of destruction he can think of (oxy-moron?). Then try to find a buyer for the data.

MAC cloning is a very simple process....there are programs that do it in one click, and editing the registry to clone the MAC only takes about 5 minutes...
The only thing that would get somebody caught would be the serial on the computer itself...
It is also very easy to wipe the hard drive so that forensics cannot find any data on...You just delete all the previous data and write it over with random bits of data and delete it...I beleave they can't read anything once it's been passed about 3 to 4 times...
It sounds like the prof just scared the shit out of the dumb student, and thought that he would eventually get caught...

They can read up to somewhere around 100 times with just regular data over writing it. What you do is use specail conflicting data and symetry to make it so they can't tell between the different layers of data.
