Honey-Water contam??
    #477246 - 12/02/01 03:03 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Is there a way to tell, prior to knockin' my jars up if my Honey-water is contaminated??

I just innoculated the water tonight so I'm just asking in advance. I'll put pic up if needed... :-)

Apart from sniffing, the myc water should *only* have whitish/clearish bits of growing mycelium in the jar.....ANY other colour ie red, black, yellow tiny little specks of any sort means contams....

I gave 3 different jars a go with agar squares (not spores) before I had no contaminants...i think it was the honey I used - when I switched to dissolved malt powder (4%) instead, the problem disappeared...;)

Within several hours of knocking up the honey-water. I noticed some stringy, floating, web-like strands kind of wobbling around in there. The Mycilium can't get going that fast can it? Any how I'm gonna do another one since they take so little to get going.

I noticed that anything floating is generally a contam cause the mycelium is always on the bottom

Well, I think I suspect my syringe of being contaminated. I'm also gonna go with Kayro syrup. Honey has too much shit in in it. Wax namely.
