Breeding Mushrooms?
    #4770340 - 10/07/05 06:20 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

This post is 1 of a collection of ideas I've come up with from all the different documents I've read. I'm hoping to get some replies from people who know or think they know or have suggestions on my ideas, or people that might be interested in trying it (which I don't really suggest, tests cost money and time, and these ideas are products of my mind, and may or may not work, and with every hypothetical experiment, the results are unpredictable). I will give my guesses and expectations, and once my current crop is ready to harvest I will gather some spore prints and test my ideas and report. My crop is estimated for harvest between Nov. 1 to Nov. 15, and I'll start A.S.A.P.

      1. My first and personally most favorite idea (I've only posted one idea to make a shorter post & to have time to gather more research) is breeding mushrooms, but since they are hermaphroditic, and make spores I don't even know if this is possible. What I plan to do is to make spore solution for two different species (I.E. Ecuador & Penis Envy) and mix the solutions in a syringe and inoculate a few cakes, and a few agar dishes. If they fully collonize, I'll continue to grow them and try to get them to flush.
  What I think will happen is a few different things. (A) The two fungi spores will breed :grin:, although I doubt this because spores won't magically fuse together (I don't think anyway) & I'm not doing anything to fuse them;
(B) The myceliums will fight for colonization, and mabey kill each other? or stunt the growth.
(C) The myceliums will grow together; and either mix breeds , or grow two different shrooms from one cake.  :smirk:
(D) One mycelium will overpower the other.
(E) Other. (I think I had 1 or 2 more ideas for outcomes, but I can't remeber now)

Well thanks for atleast looking at my idea, I hope that some people will reply, and most people will take the poll.
Do you think it's possible to breed mushrooms without genetic engineering?
You may choose 1
Do you think my idea will work?
You may choose 1
Is my idea at all interesting?
You may choose 1

Selective breeding is a proven way to improve the stock.

I jsut don't know how you would apply selective breeding to fungi.. probably by letting the myc mingle then be see any new traits in the fruits.

Check out the advanced forums in the thread titled, "Hybridization." We've been discussing this lately, there is an answer to your questions there...

ya man, injecting a cake with 2 diff spores is theoretically going to result in battling networks of myc. one might over run it, both might colonize, either way, theyll be fighting for nutrients, and ull have less results. but good luck, maybe ull stumble across a discovery or something

Two ways to do this that you can later verify are to use massive spore dilution to get single spore germination so you can breed monokaryons, and another way is to isolate strains on agar until you have single sector dikaryons, then place a sample of each dikaryon on agar and allow them to grow together. If a third sector begins to grow from the zone of isolation, it's a cross between the two. You can verify by placing all three growths on a petri dish and see if a three-way line of isolation opens up. If so, you've successfully created a hybrid. Get ready to burn up a few hundred petri dishes before you get your first success, but it's very possible. The red spore producing cube that is about to go into circulation is a cross between the original Redboy and the PR strain, and the PE6 that is going around is a cross between PE and the Texas strain.

I'm assuming that this could be done with clones also, rather than spores or isolated myc, correct? If so, wouldn't that be an easier method?
