 Using the pot/stove to steralize

I'm just starting out and do not have a pressure cooker. Surely, I will get one in the future. I am just eager to start now. Let the newbie have his fun. So anyone have specific instructions on using a pot and a stove to boil jars? I have a stove with a flame.
Should I have a raging boil before I put the jars in? After I put the jar in how far back should I set the stove knob?

if you have 40$ go to wal-mart and buy a pc they not expensive. sorry i dont know answer to ur question thou

I placed a cloth at the bottom of the pot. Filled the pot half way up to jars. Brint it to a slow boil for 1`1/2 hours. Let it cool for 2 hours then inoculated.
Had no probs so far...
After 5 mins of boiling just check and make sure the jars arent jumping about...

I took a rack and set it up so the tops of the jars are close to the top of the pot. Then fill with water to the bottom of the jars but not touching them. Then I turn it on as high as it goes, gas also, and let it go for 2 hours. I figure 30min to full boil and 90 min to sterilize. About halfway through I top off the water. Less than 10% contam so works for me!
