Growing in South Florida
    #4766354 - 10/06/05 09:52 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I've been reading a lot of the information on growing mushrooms on this site, but all of it seems irrelevant to my situation. I live in South Florida, where shrooms grow rampantly, but I want to create a situation which doesn't require hunting for them. Is there any way I can create a simple setup that will facilitate this need? Could I just get a tub, fill it with damp cow manure, and tap spores onto it from some very fresh shrooms? What is the bare minimum I need? Humidity and temperature is not a problem, and obtaining fresh shrooms most definitely is not as well. Also, would there be any sanitary concerns?

if shrooms are readily available why go into the risk of cultivating them?
i would get some colonized cow patties from a field and toss them in your back yard under a bush or something

I live in central FL , and I don't like hunting them either. I did it a few time , but I decided it wasn't worth the risk for a fungus I can cultivate in my closet.

Look into the PF tek , and the poor man's pod(sterilite tub from walmart). Spores from wild growing mushrooms aren't worth the trouble IMO. They will most likely be contaminated and you'll just have to start over again. You don't want to just tap the spores onto the substrate either , it may work but it would take forever for them to germinate and grow. Check the cultivation archive for info on making spore syringes from prints , or you can make an liquid culture and inject it much like a spore syringe. LC is my favorite since mycelial growth can be seen in as little as two days. Third and least difficult option for noobs is to order a syringe from one of our sponsors , I highly reccomend Spores101.

I've been known to give away free prints if you think your up to the task , infact I just sent out two African Traneski prints yesterday. I don't have any left at the moment , but I should have some cambodians ready within a week.

Either way , GL in your endeavors

Thanks for the info. This is my idea for a cheap as dirt grow setup: 1 tupperware container, 1 bag of cheap manure, 4 gallons of water, 4 extra fresh shroom caps. I'm sure you know a lot more about shroom cultivation than I do, MaJikFungus, but here in S.F. (West Palm) you can go to a field one day and it will be completely empty, go back 2 days later and 50 ready-to-pick shrooms will have developed. So I can't help but think that tapping ripe shroom caps onto wet manure will produce more than generous results. I have everthing minus the manure, so I hope to be producing shrooms in the near future. My only concern is in regard to sanitation... should that even be a concern? If anyone can help me out on that it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, I will post my (hopefully) great results in my cheap delve into shroom growing.

You'd be better off taking a cow pie that has mycelium growing on it and mixing it good with pasturized manure rather than tapping spores onto it. There is a boatload of info on the site. There is a little more involved than what you're thinking. Here are some links to help you out:

You may also try putting a bunch of fresh shrooms in a blender with water and pouring the slurry onto an outdoor patch of poo and wheat straw. If you want to grow indoors, you will need to be sterile with your work. Outdoor grows don't require sterile techniques.
