I don't get the big deal? The law just states I can protect myself and my property with deadly force if necessary. So?

Let me tell you about one of our neighbors we had down in Florida. Let's call him "Mr Duffy". Now Mr. Duffy was 70-ish retired and didn't have a lot to do, so he bitched - about anything he could. If he didn't like what the neighbors were painting their house, he'd bithc and cuss endlessly. He also liked to call the cops - a lot. He called them on me no less than 3 times for smoking cigarettes on the back porch of my grandparents place. He also drank, and when he did he got even meaner. He beat his wife up a few times too. To make a long story short, he was a bitter, mean old son of a bitch. Now imagine Mr Duffy with a shotgun. Eek!

Of course, I'm sure most Florida citizens will use a little common sense. But there are those who really have no common sense or are just plain crazy, like our Mr. Duffy. I don't know, but I believe we have a much saner law about this sort of thing in Tennessee. You can use deadly force on your property if you are being burglerised or threatened. To move this out onto the streets is just a bit mad to me.....

Well thats really a mute point because the criminally insane like Mr. Duffy will take the law into their own hands anyways regardless so it just gives more power to the ordinary law abidding citizen against the Mr. Duffy types.

previously there had been some ambiguity as to whether a person was required to attempt a retreat from an attacker before using deadly force. the new law states that as long as you've got a right to be where you are, if you are attacked and faced with serious injury or death, you can defend yourself as you see fit, without first making an attempt to escape the situation. it's not a major change, and i think it's reasonable.

Sigh.

Why don't you read the bill. That is exactly what it states -- in your dwelling. And -- in certain very narrowly defined circumstances, in your vehicle if you are occupying it -- i.e. a carjacking or kidnapping situation. You are not allowed to use deadly force to stop a car thief from snarfing your stereo out of your car parked in the street. You have to be IN the car.

Despite all the clueless Libbie blathering in the idiot press, this does not mean you can initiate shootouts in the streets.

That's it, that's all.

it says that a person may use deadly force, and has no duty to retreat, if:

"He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony"

or

"The person against whom the defensive force was used was in the process of unlawfully and forcefully entering, or had unlawfully and forcibly entered, a dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle..."

Maybe gun ownership should be made mandatory.

That's not entirely unreasonable. It's been quite successful in Switzerland.

While it would be nice, I don't think it should be forced on people. The last thing we need is people who don't like guns being force to own them. They wouldn't take the time to adequately learn about them or properly train with them.

Agreed. I think that mandatory gun ownership would be like mandating that everyone own a printing press and put out their own newsletter, or that everyone owns their own church. I think that their should be few, if any, restrictions on gun ownership.

i am a florida resident. not from this back ass state, but it will due for now. I have mixed feelings about this law. I am personally a flelon and i am not alowed to own a gun, and of course this stat you can "privatly purchase" a gun from a pistol or rifle form a gun show with out the need for paperwork. but i'd never do anything like that of course. but as a shroomer i have troublesome nightmares about this situation. but non the less its important we have the right to own and use guns and not just for hunting. we have the right afforded to us for good reason. our forfathers knew sticks and rocks were not going to win future wars against the government if it was to get away from the people. we are afforded the right to own the very guns the military owns. for it would not be a fair fight if we were ill equiped. i think while it is a shame some might die in for questionable reasons. rember PoPot, Hitler, and Stalin to mention a few were in favour of gun control. we have to weigh in the consequances of not being able to own and use firearms, i choose in favour of the right to bare arms.................. give me freedom or give me death.

If you were in jail for a felony and they judged you safe to be back in society, I don't see any reason to deprive you of a firearm.

personally, I don't mind the fact that felons can't
legally purchase firearms or vote.

There are states where felons can vote. This fact is usually covered up though.

Maine, Massachusetts, Utah and Vermont allow incarcerated felons to vote.
In Ohio, felons can re-register to vote.
In Florida your voting rights can be reinstated by state officials.
In Alabama you can apply to have your voting right restored.
In New York felons are eligible to vote after they complete their prison term and finish parole.

Those are going off memory from last year, so they may be updated. If you are a felon, check your states voting regulations to see if you are eligible to vote.
