Full step by step tutorial of casing method!
    #4756134 - 10/04/05 09:04 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I wrote this up last night when I was bored. It started out for me because I like to have everything laid out, exactly what to do step by step, but then I realized that anyone could benefit from it. Please tell me of any suggestions or corrections that need to be made. Hopefully I'll be adding some pics as I work my way through the process. Lemme know what you think!

Step 0/Day 0: This guide should be used after inoculation, incubation, and should be started the day the entire outside of the cake is covered in mycelium.

Step 1/Day 1: Once cakes cover totally, let incubate 2-3 more days for complete mycelium growth throughout the cake.
? Influential Conditions:
o 80-85˚ F
o No light
o No gas exchange

After complete growth take the cakes out of the jars and dunk them in clean water overnight.

Step 2/Day 3: After overnight dunking, crumble the cakes into large pieces in a bag with a sterile utensil and let sit in the bag for 24 hours to strengthen growth. Leave in same conditions as Step 1 during this process.  I am using 6 ? pint jars, placing 2? cakes in each of 2 separate Ziploc bags.

Also in this day the casing should be made using the following method (Roadkill?s Tek):
? Ingredients:
o 6 parts vermiculite
o 4 parts coco coir (expand in hot water first)
o .05 parts calcium carbonate (oyster shells)

? Method of Preparation:
o Using a large mixing bowl, mix hot water with the coir and let it stand for 10 mins to expand.
o Add the calcium carbonate, and then the vermiculite.
o Stir until nicely blended.
o Add/Subtract water from the mixture until a few drops of water come out when squeezed in your clean hand.

? Method of Sterilization:
o Clean out microwave with bleachy water and spray area around microwave with Lysol.
o Place casing mix in a clean microwaveable container and place some saran wrap over the top with a few holes in it. Microwave for 5 mins on high.
o Take out and stir with clean utensil, then microwave for another 5 mins on high. Let cool overnight.

Note: If microwave dried out the mix too much add some water and bring back to a moisture of a few drops of water squeezed out of your clean hand.

Step 3/Day 4:  Today the substrate will be cased using the following procedure:

? Supplies:
o 2 large disposable aluminum deep lasagna pans. (12x9 or 13x10 will do)
o Substrate bags
o 1:20 H2O2 to H2O mixture
o Casing mix

? Method of Casing:
o Wipe pans clean with rubbing alcohol.
o Spread each bag of substrate into a pan evenly across the bottom layer. A good depth should be between 1?? -- 2? of substrate layer.
o Evenly apply casing mixture to substrate at a depth of 25% of your substrate layer. Leave the surface slightly rough and porous.
o Mist with peroxide mixture until surface is as moist as possible without flooding it.
o Cover pans with tin foil and leave in same conditions as Step 1 for 2-3 days.

Initiating Pinning:

Step 4/Day 7: Once the mycelium colonizes the sublevel of the casing mix, move into the fruiting chamber. If some mycelium patches jump up to the top level before the majority of the sublevel is colonized, lightly keep patching those areas until the rest of the colonization catches up.

? Fruiting chamber:
o Large tub or other means of containment. Cut holes in 4-6 places around the tub and stuff with poly-fil.
o Line bottom of tub with 1?perlite with ??water.
o Place pans on top of perlite without any top on the pans.
o Place lid on fruiting chamber

? Pinning influential conditions:
o 95-100% rH
o 72-74˚F Temp
o Fresh Air Exchange
o 12-14hrs a day of light. (although very little light is necessary, some insist that 12 hrs gives maximum pin set.)

The mentioned conditions should be present in the tub before placing the casings in. Pins should form within 3-7days after placing in fruiting chamber. During this period the terrarium should be fanned 3-5 times daily and misted when needed. (The casing layer should be as moist as possible without it flooding.) If the casing becomes too wet, keep fanning without misting. Once many pins develop, move onto the next step.

Fruiting:

Step 5/Day 12: Once a lot of pins develop change the terrarium to match the following conditions:

o 90-93% rH
o 74-76˚F Temp
o Continue fanning 3-5 times daily.
o 6-12 hrs light.
o Shouldn?t need to mist but if it?s really dry then do lightly.

The pins should turn into mature mushrooms within the next 1-3 days. Then move onto harvesting.

Harvesting:

Step 6/Day 14: Carefully and sterilely remove all mature mushrooms and aborts. Don?t remove any pins though, as these might fruit in the next flush. Wherever fruits were removed patch lightly with casing and mist to the most moist it can be. Place the pans back into the fruiting chamber and repeat the process starting at Step 4 until the casing is exhausted of mushrooms.

The mushroom matter should be fan dried for 1-2 days and then placed in a desiccant chamber until cracker like.

thanks guys, changed! yea i hadnt seen a simple fool-proof guide of EVERYTHING that goes on yet, just peices of the tek scattered about. So i mostly did this for me, but i figured it would help all the other noobies out. I think i'm going to add the beginning process too from a list of all the supplies, to making the substrate jars, to inoculation and incubation. I really want to include a lot of detailed pics because I know thats what has helped me the most up to this point. Thanks for your feedback though guys! Any more suggestions?

P.S. I just cut/pasted this from word so all the bullet indentations are off, after I make this a full grow guide w/ pics I will make it into a better format and upload it.
