Birthing Partially Colonized Jars + difficulties :) plz help!
    #4755907 - 10/04/05 07:47 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

just receiving my casing and poo in the mail here, so i figure id check on my jars, which had stalled their mycelium growth, and what did i find??? some pins! eheheh. First of all, i guess id share the information that the 12-1pt jars had been sitting on the shelf (before inoculation) for many weeks, and probably lost some moisture since they had been pre-punctured. After inoculation, colonization was going very smoothly, despite my lacking of an incubator. Jar growth almost completely stalled after 4 weeks, but i recently acquired funds / materials to create a sufficient incubator, so i attempted to revive the "80% colonized" jars. I placed them in the incubator at optimal temps about 2 days ago, and i dont believe that the mycelium is taking much more hold on the cake, maybe a little, but not much. My poo will be here tomorrow, and when i went to check on the jars, i noticed that there was a deecent pin or two (.5" - 1") inside one and maybe two of the jars. Now i know this isnt a huge deal, infact, is very common, but here are my questions now that i have set the story.

Before casing these jars...

1. Do I sterilize a knife and scrape off uncolonized substrate from jar? Or just crumble the whole jar (assuming contam free) and mix that with poo for my casing?

2. Do i pick off the pins before crumbling? Or just crumble them in with it? (i would assume to pick, just gotta make sure)

3. Since my jars have been "colonizing" for so long, do they still have life? The mycelium has definetly not reached 100% colonization in any of my jars, due to my lack of incubation and long shelf life of jars before inoculation, but they should still be fine once crumbled and mixed with poo... (i am guessing the nutrients and moisture found in the poo will allow the mycelium to come back to life)?

Thats it for now, just gotta make sure everything is OK. This is my first grow, and i will be casing 10 of the jars and discarding the other two do to suspected contam + not worth risk. These are one pint jars, and i will be casing all 10, 2 jars crumbled in each casing tray. My FC is working great, and with your help, will successfully have a great yield with my first grow / first casings. Thanks shroomery!

I would wait till 100% colonized but if you must sterilize a knife with flame sterilization and swab with alcohol. Cut off uncolonized portion and spawn to bulk. I pick off pins before crumbling cakes but thats me. All my jars stay on the shelf till fully colonized so your jars should stay fine to, providing you keep them in a sterile enviorment.

Why not be patient and wait for 100% its not worth wasting the poo.
