Anyone know anything about fruit trees?
    #4750723 - 10/03/05 08:07 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

So I was at a garden centre the other day and there were a couple of crab apple trees I liked the look of. They were quite expensive so I thought I'd pick an apple off each tree and plant them since they were fast growers.

So my question is:

Is it only the female that produces apples or doesn't it matter?

I like cooking with crab apples

They go very well with game and cheese.

Yeah, it takes about 5 years to start fruiting.

I'm not too bothered about the wait as I can get wild crab apples in my local woods, I just don't want to grow a tree that will never produce fruit!

Make it so that your tree grows oranges, apples, pears and other fruits. That would be cool

I've grafted hallucinogenic cacti so why not fruit trees?

I'll try that when I can.

I think crab apple trees have really pretty lavender pinkish blossoms too, they are nice to watch in the spring.

The blossoms are certainly a sight to behold in the spring and the colorful fruit look great in the Fall

I actually made jelly out of them for the first time this year.

Went GREAT with game, cheese and pork and I've got enough left to last me till next season! :yesnod:

I know that apple trees grown from seed are never like their parents. If you plant those seeds, you are probably gonna get some trees with good fruit, some trees with horrible fruit, some that don't fruit at all, you may even plant the next Fuji or Pink Lady. It's like rolling a 12,000 sided dice. Grafting is the way to go if you are after a particular taste, texture, blossom, size, etc.
Of course, all apples have juice that can be collected and fermented.
By the way I learned this from an excellent book "Botany of Desire" by John Pollen, Highly recommend it, you'll also learn about tulips, potatoes and marijuana.
