Is a software firewall recommended if you have a hardware one?
    #4750612 - 10/03/05 07:44 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've got a router, which has a firewall. I was wondering if a software firewall was really needed in terms of blocking incoming traffic. I'll still keep it to prevent certain programs from accessing the internet, but is the hardware firewall good enough?

I have a hardware router and have never needed a software firewall on any of my computers.

Because of the nature of a NAT router, the way it works, unsolicited connections are blocked by default. Even during the breakout of viruses like sasser and mydoom, I was fine without software firewalls or anti-virus programs because I had a router.

Adding a software firewall into the mix will just slow things down.

I've been using a hardware firewall for years, never needed anything more.

unnecessary as the previous posters have said unless you have a laptop that you carry around with you & visit wifi spots.

I've never used an anti-virus even before I set up a hardware firewall. It seems to work fine without any software.

anything like a really trimmed down firewall that will prevent certain programs from accessing the internet? there's a lot of software that "phones home" and thats the main reason I have a software firewall.
