Greyish black circular thing (pic)
    #4749657 - 10/03/05 04:24 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Okay, so I got busy and had some jars of rye and casing I pc'd about a week and a half ago. I just had time today to get to them. When I open the lid to the pressure cooker, there is this weird circular thing floating in the water inside the pressure cooker, and one of the rye jars is broken. Has anyone seen this before?

^^^this is what it looked like growing on my rye.

^^^this is what it looks like on aluminum foil floating on water.

I'm going to look at in under a scope in the morning, but has anyone seen this before? I don't really see anything that looks like in in any of the pics of contams. Also, the circular floaty is about 3.5 cm in diameter, and very fibrous. It held together when I removed it with forceps. There was other slimier stuff, but this was solid.

Blurry pic, but most likely bacteria. The more important question is what caused the jar to break? Were they vented/filtered?

Yeap, looks contaminated. If you don't use a spacer in the bottom of your PC, try getting one.
