Accelerated Jar Growth???
    #4748979 - 10/03/05 01:32 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Many teks suggest different ways to accelerate growth when producing cakes? Being that colonizing cakes are the most susceptible to contaminates; faster colonization rates means less chance of contamination. So how can we get them to colonize faster?

I have yet to try this idea, but would like to post it anyways to see if any of you out there think or have already found that this idea would not work.

Colonization is slowed because of the buildup of CO2 in the jars and the lack of O2. CO2 is obviously heavier than O2. So, could the jars just incubate upside down? Of course they would have to be elevated slightly by a rack or something to allow air exchange beneath the jar. This would cause the CO2 to work its way out the bottom(or top depending on how you look at it) of the lid. It would also allow more O2 to enter the jar for growth. Also with this method the lid(containing holes) would be facing down and contaminates would not land and settle on the top and eventually into the jar. I no that there is still contaminates in the air, but they are less likely to enter the jar through the bottom and there is still a "safety" layer of verm.

The downfalls of this method could be that as the cake develops and shrinks it can form a vacuum. If the jar is tampered with and flipped around the cake could slide down the jar sucking air into it and the contaminates it contains. So, to avoid this, Don't touch the jars until fully colonized. Also, pinning is effected by the drop in CO2 levels... what would happen with a lack of CO2 in the jars during incubation in the pinning process.

I don't have the means to experiment with this at this time, but i intend to very soon. Ideas or suggestions???

sounds like an easy and effective way to grow cakes faster. i notice that the cow dung/straw and verm mixture grows alot faster then verm and BRF. thats just me thou.

Leave your jars dry so you can add lots of LC. Check out these jars 72 hours after inoculation

This has definitely been done before, but usually only if colonization stalls. Temperature plays a much bigger role in the speed of colonization than the CO2 level in the jars.
