Looking for some advice
    #4748951 - 10/03/05 01:25 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Alright dudes, so here's the deal: My girl and i are seriously thinking about taking next semester off from school to do some traveling. we haven't totally decided on this yet, but the more i think about it, the more it sounds like an amazing idea. we want to start here in west mt, drive to portland for a while, follow the coast down to san fran, san jose, hit up so cal, drive across the southwest, maybe stay in santa fe for a bit. visit family in tx and ga, drive through the appalachians, end up in vermont/new hampshire/maine, and eventually make our way back across through the midwest and back to the mountains, with the possible destination of alaska, and then ultimately back to missoula for fall 06. we will be backpacking/hiking in as many places as possible along the way, and seeing whatever sights we can see. there's no plan as to how long we will be in each place. i have never made a decision like this before, and neither has she. i think it would be a liberating experience, one that would be most beneficial at this stage in life. we are young with no strings to tie us down, right? but anyway, the point of this is to ask those of you who have lived this sort of life to share some experiences, and any useful tips or advice for someone preparing for the most random and spontaneous experience of my life thus far. we have some $ in savings, and staying fed shouldn't be a problem, but if there are any good ideas as to how to keep a few bucks in the pocket, i'd love to hear it (no selling of drugs or bodies, btw). i have some glass and hemp items i could sell at concerts, she is amazing at sewing and knitting clothing items, and we're learning how to do leatherwork (got a sweet pair of mocassins in the works right now). i hope to decide to go for it and hit the road by Feb. any input from you folks would be valuable. thanks brothers and sisters!
Peace & Love :sun:

Well, I think you pretty much covered what you could do for money.  Selling hemp at glass at concerts should bring in a few extra bucks.

Thats a smart move, taking some time off.  I did the same right after I graduated highschool.  I needed to decided what I was going to do with my life.  Just worked that year and though.  Turned out great.

Best of luck to you both.

where are all the travelers? lets hear some stories...i know this site doesn't fit the typical message board posting demographic, there are some interesting people here with some amazing experiences. i'd like to hear some of them. where have you been? what have you seen? who have you met?
we basically decided yesterday that we're going to do this trip for sure, provided we're still hanging out by the end of this semester, which i think we will be. i'm checking into a '70 vw bus for sale this afternoon, how cool would that be :peace:

Awesome. Convert it to run on bio-diesel. Free gas.

We should definately chill. I'll give you some advice and crap when I'm on later.

I'm guessing they have a top speed of 60 mph and if you get into a crash you're fucked. I'd get another kind of van.

The 1964 Volkswagen bus ad "It comes in its own box" brags that a VW Station Wagon gets over 20 miles per gallon. My own experience has been 17 to 18 mpg, mixed highway and suburban driving with a de-tuned 1800 cc engine in a rusting, rotting hulk of a Campmobile. Your mileage may vary.

From all the reports I've seen, 18 to 20 mpg is reasonable. Now and then someone will claim a whopping figure of 27 mpg. Either 1) she's lying OR 2) she has the front end lowered so that the van is always going downhill OR 3) she is Canadian and is reporting consumption in Imperial gallons.

yeah, i'm not really looking to get anywhere fast. the biodiesel idea is a good one though, veedubs get crappy mileage. we might just end up hitchhiking around the country. taking my '98 taurus would feel like a cop-out

Hitch hiking? Are you going to give suck offs for rides? Drive your car. I don't see how it's a "cop-out."

Plz explain.

dude, it's a ford fucking taurus. i shouldn't be driving one unless i'm 35 with two kids in the back seat. it is conveniently inconspicuous though. who knows, i don't really care what we drive. (we aren't going to hitchhike)

Drive it around and rock the fuck out. Take like, 20 hits of LSD and drive 130.
