rusting perlite?
    #4748871 - 10/03/05 12:57 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

hey guys, my friends cakes are on the lids of the jars in the terrerium, now after 3 weeks of succesful flushes there is orange rust that has started on the jar lids and is leaking onto the perlite...causing sections of about an inch wide to have rusty orange spots. is this harmful to his cakes? will this cause contams? Hes debating buying a fresh bag of perlite and replacing the old as well as using some sort of plastic to replace the rusty lids.? what do you guys think?

I am doubting it will. Perlite needs to be cleaned every couple of grows (or replaced if you feel need too).

put some verm down on the lids then put your cakes on top of your lids. Or use plastic lids

some people use squares of alum foil to put the lids on the perlite.

I am guessing that the perlite is getting rust on them from the side of the lids that is touching the perlite.

Cut some squares out of aluminum foil and use those to put your cakes on instead of your lids. This will help your lids last a hell of alot longer.

get some of those small butter tubs from the grocery store (better if you have some laying around empty already.. i do.) put some verm in there so you can double-end case your cakes.

change the perlite every 2 or 3 grows. i bake mine between flushes at about 450F just because i'm paranoid. i'd switch to hydroton/expanded clay/something else. perlite is messy.

Perlite is cheap. You can double end case without a butter tub. I'd rather dunk and roll myself.
