recycling used and contamined jars
    #4747869 - 10/03/05 02:56 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

has anybody done this? and how? I guess that if I take the shit out of the jar wipe it clean with alcohol, then spray lysol, then add new rye and PC I should be fine, or am I wrong? I also have some jars that aren't contamined but neither colonized, obviously I will use these first, but the same principle is made I guess with the two.

Bleach is the best for it, it will kill almost all contams and the PC will take care of the rest.

I myself have a diff method, i bake the jars for half an hour or so in the oven at 400F, nukes contams nicely.

If i had a contam in the jar i throw it out. I prefer to not even open them, if you do decide to reuse jars then empty and clean them outside of your house. Change your clothes before you go back inside your house and immediatley put them in the washing machine.

Reusing them when they have no contams, go for it.

That's really good advice.

I made the mistake of opening a jar contamed with black mold indoors and watched in horror as a freaking cloud of black spores wafted out.  There's probably millions still hiding in the hard to bleach/lysol places in my bathroom. :shake:

Not too mention all the mold that you probably inhaled. And it is quite unsafe to inhale mold spores. They can cause respiratory issues.

Well, fortunately I had the sense to take a deep breath before the spores got too far and ran out of the bathroom (after unleashing a a major counter-offensive with Oust).  I haven't had any respiratory issues since but regardless I learned a valuable lesson :yesnod:

Nah, im not saying that one exposure is going to put you in the hospital. But there was a shroomery member who was hospitalized due to over-exposure to too many types of molds.

Use a big ass rubbermaid - fill 3/4 full with hot - soapy - bleach (lots of bleach) -water.

Hold jars under water - one at a time, twist lid a turn or 2 - so jar fills with soapy bleach water & let them soak overnight.

Next day - empty jars - scrub out - run through dishwasher.

That's a good idea agar, if I run into this problem I'll be sure to use that method to clean my jars.

ok, thanks for the replies. I think though Im gonna risk it and use the jars that didn't colonize good or bad fungus, first empty them, clean them with alcohol and lysol, put rye and PC it. Do you still think its too risky? I know you have to be very careful with this stuff, by experience though I have worked in very poor conditions and still got good results. Also, could I use these uncolonized jars as they are now or is this a bad idea (for some reason they haven't sprouted anything, right?)...
