Hot Water Pasteuriztion - A How To Pictorial

Hot Water Pasteurization
Safety first; Hot water can cause BURNS INSTANTLY OR DEATH FROM SCALDS. Children, disabled and elderly are at highest risk of being scalded.
Make sure you warn everyone in the house if you turn up the water heater. Put masking tap on the faucets and across the sinks if you want to be extra safe.
These directions are based on using an electric water heater. First thing to do is locate the circuit breaker for the water heater.
Open the breaker box and locate the breaker(s) for the water heater. In this example, the
chart shows that the 2nd and 3rd breakers from the top -on the right side- are for the water
heater. They're marked "WATER H" on the chart- #4,and #6.
Flip the breaker(s) to the off position.
Now let's go to the water heater. We'll need 2 screwdrivers, a Phillips and a common bit(a 'pointy one' and a 'flat one'. This one has two thermostats- an upper and a lower. They are behind panels on the front of
the heater.
Remove the screws holding on the panels. First the top panel.
Behind it we find the thermostat. The thermostat is connected to the ominous looking wires,
so make sure the power is off.
Insert the flat screwdriver blade into the screw on the dial and turn the dial to 'very
hot'.
Now do the lower panel.
It has a strip of yellow insulation over it. Move/tuck the insulation out of the way. Make
sure the power is off at the breaker!!!
Use the flat screwdriver to turn the dial to the highest setting.
Now replace the panels, or at least shut the door to the water heater cabinet.
Turn the breaker(s) back on.
I wait anywhere from 6-12 hours for the water to heat up. So you can set it before you go to
sleep for use the next morning, or set it in the morning to use that evening.
This example is for two bales of straw from Michaels craft store. They will fill a 48 Qt.
ice chest nicely.
I bleach the ice chest and then rinse it well.
The water from the tap is now 160-165F. I use a small portable stove to heat additional
water next to the tub.
You can also heat the extra water on the stove. I heat the extra
water to 180F. A set of heavy rubber gloves(Mr. Clean brand-$3 @ walmart) are good to wear
when handling hot water.
Pour the 'extra' water over the straw, and then start adding the hot tap water. Partially
closing the lid of the ice chest helps keep in some of the heat while you're filling it. Fill the ice chest completely. Fill it until the water starts to spill over the edge. Then
shut the lid. Make it sure it can seal well, removing any errant straw that you can. Put a heavy weight on top of the ice chest to keep it closed. Insert your thermometer(roast/meat thermometer-$3@ walmart) through a hole drilled in the
top of the ice chest.
The temp should be 160F. Don't let it go below 160F, and don't let it go over 175F.
I spray the outside of the ice chest, and the inside of the tub with 10% bleach at this
point.
60 -90 minutes above 160F is what you need.
Pull the drain plug on the ice chest to drain the water. If the drain is blocked by straw,
poke a screwdriver in the drain to move the straw. The HOT water will come out of the drain
quickly, so wear gloves or use extreme care when working with the drain.
I pull the ice chest up so one end is propped up on the side of the tub so it can all drain
well. I let it drain and cool from 8-12 hours. If the straw if still hot it can kill your
spawn.
The straw is ready to go into a rubbermaid container.

I hope this may help those of you that wanted to try the hot water method.
Lemme know if you have any questions, or if there's anything that's not clear in the instructions.
Click the pic to enlarge it- the photos are hi-res and have a lot of detail.
Anyone know how I submit this for FAQ consideration??

What is the point of turning off the breaker before you adjust your thermostat?

adjusting the thermostat doesn't require turning off the breaker...and it is not in the same ballpark as rewiring your house.
adjusting your thermostat is not "working on an electrical item", it is simply turning a knob.
