An "Old Shoe"
    #4743865 - 10/02/05 03:11 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Okay, I'll post this again.  Had 3 flushes of this species pop up on a stump out back from May-Oct 1st.  So, it's a woodlover, very tough on the stem, polypore, I think, and looks as so.  I have some LC jars going that are showing cloudiness...not contam, I don't think, but nothing tangible in a, say, reishi myc form.  I'm contemplating just sucking up some LC from one of the jars I used for cloning and inoculating some sterilized woodchips.

My question: Can anyone tell me what the latin name is for this thing or what its growth parameters are?  It's edible--I know that much.  And you can put it in soups, but must avoid the tough tissue by picking it early  (hence the term "old shoe").

  Here are some pics:

Thanks for any help.

Polyporus squamosus, besides old shoe common names are Dryad's saddle and pheasant back.

Thanks.   I had a print out describing it but I lost it and that was the only name I could remember.

I kid of like it when you cook it up with bouillon and some vegetables...can't eat it raw.  It's mainly just filler.  I have these LC jars of it from some cloned tissue...I can't find anything about how to grow it, tho.  My jars have some sort of growth, but I don't know how robust the myc is supposed to look.  I'm thinking I'll just inoculate a couple of woodchip bags and see if it grows.

I'll report back if things work or fail miserably.
