    #4734478 - 09/29/05 11:55 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

These unknown species were found in a cow pasture just 5 minutes from my house!

* Habitat: BC,Canada in a cow field, on top of a dung pile with grass growing over it
* Characteristics of the gills: Purple grayish and attached
* Characteristics of the stem: from 1/2 cm to 3 cm long, from 1mm to 4mm in diameter, white, slimy, solid and thin
* Characteristics of the cap: from 1/2 cm to about 1cm in diameter, white with a yellow orangery color in the middle of it,slimy, one half circle round and with a little nipple on top
* SPORE PRINT COLOR (new): jet black
* Color that the mushroom bruises: none noticed
* Scent of the mushroom: just like a regular mushroom nothing special
* Any thing else you might find important:z The whole field was a hay field what I mean by this is that A LOT of hay was lieing around in the field (just harvested)

In natural habitat:

Displayed with palm as to refer to size better:

Shot of gills (on one of the pics on some farther left mushrooms the gills look brown blackish but this is only because of the light):

In all sizes:

Sporprint color:

I was thinking maybe subbs?Because they look a lot like them and the spore print color is the same.
I thank you all VERY much for helping me out!!

PS: I usually never pick the pins this was only done to assure an absolute accurate identification

Yes, it's because they're LBMs. I can't really tell from the photos - is the spore print color a purplish brown, dark brown, or black?

Are the gill faces mottled?

Are the gill edges a different color than the faces?

Happy mushrooming!

Well it's more black than brown but I can see a little bit of light brown mixed into the print..as far as the one that is mottled goes it's a different species that I accidentally took a picture of with the other ones, luckily I noticed the difference and took it out. The gill edges aren't a different color than the faces it's just the spore's on the dried specimen, the did however have a brownish film layer in the middle that disappeared as it dried.

The reasons those questions are important in this case are:

The gill faces of Panaeolus and Psathyrella are often mottled (unlike other genera). If you see gills that are mottled then you've narrowed down the genus quite a bit.

Panaeolus often have pale gill edges due to colorless sterile cells at the margin (cystidia). When looking at gills, always carefully look at the edge to see if it's a different color. In some mushrooms (particularly Mycenas) the gill edge can even be a striking different color (like red).

Since the spore print isn't a pure black (it should be truly black, not just dark brown) then I would lean toward these being Agrocybe, Hebeloma, or possibly Psathyrella.

Unfortunately, identifying LBMs accurately (even to genus!) is often an exercise in frustration.

Happy mushrooming!
