Does this look like something I should be concerned about?
    #4743505 - 10/02/05 01:44 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Hi there,
This is my first attempt at a dung/straw-based substrate. These are the results so far. As you can see, the caps are split many times. Is this a sign of too little ventilation, or excessive humidity? I wasn't really able to properly ventilate the chamber. Aside from the cosmetics, is this anything I should really be concerned about?

(P.S. I've grown this same strain before.)--This is what it looked like before, on a thin bed of PF substrate:

- Quite a difference, eh? There are far fewer shrooms this time, but the ones there are a lot bigger and meatier.

look to me like a sign of HUGE ASS CAPS!!!

i don't really know what i'm talking about but seriously those are ginormous. i wouldn't worry about it they still look pretty healthy maybe just growing to big and fast for their own good.

I'd say harvest 'em! PM me and I'll give you my addy so I can perform rigorous performance tests on them.

No really, they look fine, and ready for plucking.

It looks like your humidity is too low not too high. What are you doing for humidification?

Nothing, actually. Ordinarily I'd be spraying, but my casing mix was a bit too moist to begin with, and there has consistently been a good amount of condensation on the inside of the fruiting chamber. The casing mix never looked "dried out", as I've observed in my previous PF-based casings.

I also wasn't able to ventilate very well, (fanning twice a day; and ten very small holes drilled towards the bottom of the chamber and filled w/polyfill). Are these results characteristic of too low a humidity? I'm planning on spraying more for the next flush.

No those do not look like it is too low humidity. When you let mushrooms mature for a long time like that the caps can split like that. Your getting fluffy mycelium growth on the wall of your terrarium, if your humidity was low enough to split your caps then you would not get such growth.

Right, thanks. As I say, it's my first attempt with dung, so I'm just getting a handle on it; and it's surprising to see the difference in results in substrates! Same exact strain.

it can also be caused by dry air entering the chamber frequently. nothing to worry about unless you are looking for those perfect caps of the biguns. regardless they are nice, congrats.

Also, I dont let them get to that old of a growth stage unless I plan on printing from them. And even then where your at is the longest I would let them go.

Yea, I like to try to pick my flushes all at once, which is why I let some go longer.  (Uneven pinset)  In this case, though, I picked the bigguns-- one weighed 90 grams, I think my biggest so far.  I'll get the rest tomorrow for prints.

Well, I sure thank ye guys, and I know he does too:

(Looks like his eyes are bigger than his stomach)  :tongue2:

yes... you'll need to see a chiropractor about the back troubles you'll be having
when you go to lift those monsters... as Hawk said, everything you're doing seems
to be just fine, you may want to harvest and print them before the caps make it to
full plane and start to split

About 3 to 3 1/2".
Also, I think maybe some of the cracking/curling is happening because, (aside from over-maturity), it is pretty humid in there, and then I take off the lid and fan vigorously twice a day. So it goes rather humid to rather dry rather quickly. Just a thought.
