Tiny black specks... (UPDATED WITH PICS)
    #4742374 - 10/01/05 10:15 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I have about 9 jars are around 95%+ thru colonization, im using BRF/Verm is it normal to see tiny specs of verm (black/grey) on the bottom of jar, like if the verm stuck to the glass and it didnt colonize around it?

I had 1 jar thrown out due to green mold on verm, aswell as another thrown out for a small green bloch on the bottom of the jar.

Now im worrying it spread to the other jars, this might not be good.

EDIT (PICS):

I think I know what you're talking about. After sterilizing, I sometimes saw in the bottom of the jars some sort of "verm mud." I didn't know what caused this, and it's never a whole lot, so I inoculate anyways. Everything goes well, but that spot never would colonize. Think about dirt. ok now add water. you got mud. There are no air pockets or spaces for the myc to colonize. I just waited until the jars appeared to be as colonized as they would get, and I birthed the jars like normal. To my surprise, under this "mud," the cakes colonized fine and the "mud" was left in the jar (it dind't come out with the rest of the cake). I'm guessing that there was too much moisture in the jar and it simply settled down at the bottom of the jar.

My camera doesnt wanna work off the cord and it doesnt wanan charge up the bateries so i cant use it now. However I dont think its mud its too small for that its tiny specs think of it as a grain of pepper or maybe smaller. and most if not all jars have them at the bottom of the jar in numerous locations.

Keep an eye on the specks and colour the glass with a felt pen where they are. If they grow toss the jars back in the PC and get rid of them. The voice of experience here, you do not want to mess with black molds. I wound up in the hospital and almost died about 5 1/2 years ago from A. Niger that sprouted in my lungs

thats what happened to me anyways. cause it shrinks midway and travels with the growth. so when its almost thru the top where the dry verm is shrinks too and seems to sometimes get on the side of the cake.

It could also be spores that have not germinated yet. I have had jars in the past that I was colonizing that had black dots near the bottom, but I know they were just spores that were pressed against the glass.

Hard to say w/out pics. but yeah, the best thing to do is to keep an eye on it...if it spreads get rid of that ASAP.

hmm i dunno, the syringes i got were almost clear, I had to really look at the syringe to see the tiny spores.

Well, that's how I make most of my syringes (fairly clear), but from time to time, I will see a black spot of a spore before it germinates. Sure if you have a really dark syringe, you will have black dots everywhere. W/out pics it will be very hard to determine. Isolating and keeping an eye on them is your best bet.

But as this hobby goes, you have to take the good with the bad. It would suck if it was a contam.

Best of luck to ya though, I hope everything comes through ok.

EDIT: after looking at your pics, I don't really see anything of concern....maybe it's just my monitor, but everything on that cake looks fine. I see 0 contams.

Those look fine, to me.
It's probably just some uncolonized verm hanging around.
You should be fine to proceed as planned!
