The Rum Diary by HST

The Rum Diary is one of the only novels ever written by Hunter S. Thompson.  Written in 1959 I believe, Hunter S. Thompson was only 22 when he began this semi-autobiographical novel.  Before reading this book, I had read several mixed reviews, some claiming that this novel would've been better left unpublished.  Well, after recently finishing the book, I'd have to say that it is an essential piece of the HST library.  Anyone else read this?

A few memorable quotes from the book:

"...to praise the ends and ignore the means, a time-honored custom that justifies almost anything except shrinking profits."

"He talked about luck and fate and numbers coming up, yet he never ventured a nickel at the casino because he knew that the house had all the percentages.  And beneath his pessimism, his bleak conviction that all the machinery was rigged against him, at the bottom of his soul was a faith that he was going to outwit it, that by carefully watching the signs he was going to know when to dodge and be spared.  It was fatalism with a loophole, and all you had to do to make it work was never miss a sign.  Survival by coordination, as it were.  The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to those who can see it coming and jump aside."

I have mixed feelings about this book. It's good, but it's HST's most difficult piece to appreciate.

I enjoyed it.

Read it in highschool, and definately loathed and admired Yeoman.

I enjoyed the Rum Diary a lot...its similar to Curse of Lono imo
