PRESSURE COOKER EXPLOSIONS!!

This is a hazard that I have come to notice (did not experience myself but have heard of others doing it and the warning on the side of mine says its very possible). Anyone that this has happened to or knows anything about why they blow up should relay the info for safety of fellow shroomeries. And yes I do know they have a warning lable, but pressure cookers where not meant (though work very well) for the cultivation of mushrooms ie putting myco bags that can block release holes and such. Response would be nice cause it kinda worry's me :P though I have used one many times.

I think you just answered your own question. They explode because the holes get blocked. On most there are several safety features built in to prevent that however.

Is that what usually leads to it is the exaust hole getting blocked? Like I knew that but is that the ultimate cause of it?

Most modern PC's have one kind or another - safety device (blow out type over pressure plug - or pressure release valve) that prevents explosions. Any PC with a WEIGHT type regulator - is very safe. If you don't block the vent. With bags inside - simply place a plate over the bags - so no bag material can block the vent.

and older pressure cookers that have a release valve might be a potentual problem.
the relief valve should be replaced every year or 2... and many are never replaced...and the relief valve fails and Kaboooom you have an explosion!~
this is the type of relief valve that I'm talking about...
they are common on older All American pressure cookers and sterilizers... and several other makes of pc's.
if you have one of these relief valves... I strongly suggest that you replace it...semi annually.
You can pick up this old style relief valve from All American...in the Sterilizer section of their parts and accessories. They no longer use this relief valve on their Pressure Cookers parts page...they suggest replacing it with the stem and rocker type.
I prefer using this type of relief valve with my All American pc's that I own.

Thanks for the info on that because I do believe that is the same valve that mine has. Prolly replace after my first flush cause the previous owner said he found it in the attic. Thanks for the help and continue telling little problems like that about certain p.c. There is no reason for anyone to get hurt by one, but not everyone knows that valve's such as what roadkill just said can fail.

also the black or red rubber overpressure plug... should be replaced every year...or after a blow out.
You can get parts for the All American pressure cookers here... https://store.wafco.com/ezmerchant/home.nsf
and here for the Sterilizers and that Pressure Relief Valve that we were talking about. https://store.wafco.com/ezMerchant/products.nsf/All%20American%20Sterilizer/Replacement%20Parts
also...
you should have the Geared Steam Gauge callibrated every few years. the cost of callibration is really not worth it in my honest opinion. I'd rather just buy a new gauge...they are only like $15.50
the Geared Steam Gauge...

LOL, yup - I love those AA PC relief valves. Pour in a pint of water, PC for 4 hours - still 98% of that pint left inside.
Old hands might remember the time - I bought a hospital size autoclave - with space inside about the size of a large oven.
When I was piping it in - I fudged on one fitting & use an ordinary copper fitting in-place of the stainless steel one that was missing.
First test heat up of that monster to the 30 PSI range - that copper fitting BLEW OFF (like a hand grenade)& shrapnel whizzed by me like 12 gauge buck shot. One chunk that flew through the shop wall was about 1/2 inch in diameter.
old agar (6Tango - back then) was one LUCKY SOB - that didn't end his life.

Yeah, generally there's the good ole rubber plug that'll pop out if there's too much pressure. Of course you should still pay attention to your PC while in use...
