Walking across the road
    #4740041 - 10/01/05 05:41 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Lets say you are walking, and inevitably you come to a 4 way stop sign, which has a car stopped at it, waving you to walk on by in front of his car.....
Now most people would walk across, but do you think that is due to trust , meaning that you trust the driver (a complete stranger) not to run over you through some psychotic episode.... or! is it due to a safety/security you feel from laws and consequences regarding vehicular manslaughter and such?
Do you feel?
You may choose only one
Trusting?
Legal security?

I trust the driver. I trust complete strangers all the time when I do things outside.

I would still walk on by in front of his car in an anarchy.

I never walk in front of cars. I either tell them to go first, or I walk behind them.

Because you don't trust the driver?

Yes. I would feel like quite an ass if I ever got ran over because I trusted a complete stranger with my life.
Chances are they'd drive off and I'd be crippled with no retribution. So I guess I have no faith in the laws/security AND I don't trust strangers.

I would not feel alive if my life would be about fear and avoiding risks. Life is full of risks. The chance that the car will run over you and that you are seriously damaged is very very very small.

If you try to avoid that risk you have to avoid a lot of other things that are more likely to harm you . I don't want to live like that.

Do you drive a car? if you do, you also put your life in the hands of strangers.

I think it is more dangerous to drive a car than to walk in front of a car that has stopped for you.

Not walking in front of a car is a lot easier to do than not driving if you have to get somewhere though.

you should have an option for "Both".... I didn't vote.

I trust most people. If they've already stopped AND waved, then I highly doubt they will randomly start moving again just to run over a total stranger. Most people don't have any motivation to do such a thing.

And if they did, the fact that they would most likely never get away with it should put a cap on any urges they might have.

I can trust a psycho, but I don't trust a psycho who can't control their compulsions. And a good deal of those people are already locked up.

and yeah, whenever you drive in a car you put your life in the hands of strangers (and they put their lives in your hands). It's a mutual thing.. and if we can't trust each other in situations like these then there is no such thing as humanity!

1) there is really nothing holding back a driver from running you down. If you walk in front of cars after getting "waved" on, you have a general trust in humanity.

2)The same thing applies here with driving. Many people dont trust other drivers, so even in the face of 75$ for a full tank of gas, they prefer to ride aroud in these tank SUV's. The Hummer driver isnt really taking on nearly as much risk as the driver of the Geo metro.

I'd trust most people not to run over me. Most people really aren't malicious, and will avoid hurting someone else for the most part.
