Help me I.D. this

I found a few of these in my lawn, all approx. the size of a softball, give or take a few inches. No obvious stem, gills or cap; it just appears to be a solid ball adhered to the ground by a very strong base. Strong mushroom smell, and heavy. The one in this picture weighed in at 290 grams. Location: midwest.

So, what are these, and are they edible?

To find a place to live between the negatives and positives.

Cut it in half vertically and see what's inside. A puffball, if still edible, should be solid white all the way through, and have no internal features like a mushroom button. It should be sort of like tofu. If it has started to changed color (yellowish of brownish, typically), then it's too old to consider eating. If it's really hard to cut in half because it's tough, then it's an earthball, all of which should be considered poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!
