Stress=seriousness
    #4738338 - 09/30/05 09:08 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Id like to make a disclaimer first:
**Im not attempting to assess anyones mental state, nor am I attempting to be on some high horse. This thread might look like it belongs in S&P, but I feel it should be in here**

Everyday I see all these people stressed out or depressed. I see a lot of talk in these forums about erratic emotions and uncontrollable fits of mania>depression.
What i see happening in america is a gearing towards a very serious and self-absorbed populous. Look at our television shows, look at the media, look at advertisements: they are all geared towards YOU. Shows like the OC, which have unrealistic drama constantly.
When did life become so serious? Life isnt serious, it just is. I find that most people i talk to who have "depression" are unable to talk about anything which doesnt involve themselves. Obsessing over dramatic bullshit which has already happened and wont be changed.

I find myself doing this while driving and it helps me when i realize that i am being self-absorbed and taking life too seriously. I get this irrational road rage, and i clench my jaw and grip the steering wheel as i think to myself how much a moron the person in front of me is.
Sure, it behooves us to placate (at times) society. Sure we need to be on time for work, so that we have a job, so that we can keep up in the materialistic realm... but strip all that away, all of society, all seriousness, and even your interactions of that day and you are left with the simple fact that you are alive, experiencing a wonderous thing called existence with a myriad of REAL emotions/feelings/sensations and that you are truly original and your perceptions are unique and proprietary.
After i put all that into perspective, I no longer see me sitting in a hot car with a busted radio, smelling car exhaust waiting for numbnuts to recognize the green light... I see me relaxed, feeling breeze on my face, experiencing the sights and sounds of perceptual reality, laughing at myself for getting worked up over something as ridiculous as another persons slow reaction.
I guess what i am getting at, and this may not work for anyone but me, is the next time you see yourself really depressed/anxious/uptight/angry/enraged , ask yourself if it all really matters, think about the big picture of the world functioning together and see if your tiny insignificant current problem isnt just you getting caught up in the rat race or thinking "me, me, me, me, me, why does this always happen to me? I am so unlucky, IIIIIII".

Depression/anxiety/anger all stems from you being unable to see beyond your own self.

You're very correct here.IMHO

What you are able to do is a goal that many people strive to reach.

I doubt if many people here don't know "intellectually" that place that you are talking about, but emotionally, well....

I envy this ability that you have and hope to someday be able to get back to the place that you're in and I hope that you're able to hang on to it.

For some people, it is a frightening risk. To me, that's the psychedelic experience."

All too true.

I can remember when i was a teenager i was constantly stressed out because i would become so angry at all the bullshit in the world. Now instead of getting angry i just laugh at it. I don't take life seriously anymore, not even money or my job. This causes some problems though with serious people... they tend to think you're crazy, when really, they're the crazy ones.

i have become very laid back through the years.
you're very right. nothing good comes of stress
or seriousness.

i know i am young and have not experienced much yet.
but everyday i sit and watch the people pass.
all i see is hollow eyes leading empty lives.
i hope i have more to look forward to.

Then choose to break away. You will have to go to war. Not with the outside world but with the fear programming within yourself.

You know what, you are not the only one who feels this way. Maybe all do at one time or another. Why do they all stay stuck then? Fear! The first enemy of a man of knowledge. A ferocious enemy and ingrained in your personality from day one for many, day two for the rest.

It's up to your personal power. Let's talk about this in 20 years and see the outcome. The vast chances are you will be one of those walking with hollow eyes. You will have been defeated by your first enemy. :mushroom2:

i planned on setting some great personal changes in motion.

with close personal examination and the use of a few
wisely chosen psychedelics.
along with a close friend and a beautiful setting.

i know this may take much time and become quite frustrating.
but i feel it needs to be done.

you are a wise man, Icelander.

i'll be sure to come to you if i ever need reassurance in my task.

This is why I think just simply grasping Nihilism is helpful.

i figured if life was as easy as being a nihilist,
why live at all?

Good point.

Also take a look at Taoism. A very workable philosophy, but not for the faint of heart.

I'm with you on your idea of the ridiculous idiocy of impatient people who care way to much about ridiculous BS (everyone). I'm constantly the passenger of other drivers who CONSTATLY bitch about what other drivers are doing. They're never able to justify their anger is a meaningful way because they're all material-oriented entities.

I constantly find myself being indirectly and directly brainwashed/manipulated that things actually matter when really you can just sit back and chill.

The part I disagree is statements of the manner of "Depression/anxiety/anger all stems from you being unable to see beyond your own self." It's true to an extent, but being in a zombified, emotionless "depressed" state, I can feel powerless and unable to feel "REAL emotions/feelings/sensations".
