Pre-PCed WBS moisture content: Measured %
    #4737181 - 09/30/05 04:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I didn't find anything specific when I searched the posts about an actual moisture percentage with WBS so I decided to measure it myself.

I soaked for about 16 hours and simmered for about 20 minutes, drained for 30 minutes (not a single drop after some gentle shaking). After stirring up to evenly distribute the moisture, I weighed about a cup in at 150g. After drying, the sample weighed 90g (two consecutive readings of 90g suggests all water was driven out).

So... that would be ((150 - 90) / 150) = >> 40% moisture content <<.

Stamets says manure should be moisture balanced to 71-74% but I don't know if that applies to spawn as well. Does this sound reasonable to the experts?

Nice.

The optimum moisture content for grain spawn is between 49-54% :thumbup:

Thanks =)

Where did the 49-54% number come from? And does this mean that preparing WBS in this fashion is inadequate to fully hydrate it? I imagine it's moisture content drops a bit during the PCing too.

Most people here and "TEKs" use more than Stamets recommendation.

If you're using the grain as spawn, it's not so big of a deal. It doesn't need to be super hydrated to colonize. The water your mushrooms grow off of will get their water from the bulk sub.

If you're fruiting off the grain itself then water content would be much more important since that's where the fruits are getting their weight from. That's why I suggest adding moistened vermiculite.

But like I said, if it's just spawn, don't worry too much about it.

That may be true, but I found in his book, when it comes to moisture contents and information as such, making composts and all, he isn't really giving his recommendation as much as giving the information from commercial mushroom growers.
