Iraq - Our money's worth?
    #4736399 - 09/30/05 11:41 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

(Third time now!)

Show of hands:

Did we really spend $300,000,000,000 wisely? Was that the absolute best purchase we could have made with that mind-boggling sum?

Did we really spend thousands of lives and tens of thousands of casualties wisely?

What tangible thing did we 'buy' with their sacrifice? How are we better and safer than before?

Where did the figure of 300 billion come from?

According to http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0519/p01s03-usmi.html?s=hns ,Congress has approved about $192 billion for the war so far.

That's just for extra monies allocated speciffically by congress for the Iraq war; the actual amount of money spent in Iraq probably greatly exceeds that. And, the Iraq war continues to suck about $5 billion a month, according to a former Pentagon comptroller (cited in above article).

Regardless of the specific sum, a mind-boggling amount of money has been spent in Iraq. In my mind, it is quesionable whether the US has benefited from the war aside from the cost; certainly, the cost outweighs the benefits.

Halliburton benefited from the war.

It is currently at just under $200,000,000,000, but our "purchase" is far from complete and will  be years and many more $$$ before extraction and then even more AFTER the troops are gone to rebuild the collapsed Iraqi economy where unemployment now is TWICE that of pre-invasion Iraq. Good job!

The spiking costs of oil are linked in some small part to our adventure in Iraq which is costing us all in so-called hidden costs.

We've opened up a front to fight the terrorists on their own turf. Instead of them blowing themselves up in a Jewish cafe or planning a plot on U.S soil they are looking down the barrel of our soldiers rifles. We are killing terrorists and breaking up the infastructure that organizes their suicide bombings.

I'm not sure if democracy in iraq is a wise strategic decision in order to curb islamic-terrorism, however.

Trouble is the terrorists wern't in Iraq before Bush invaded.

They appear to be quite happily blowing themselves up in Madrid and London.

We are killing terrorists and breaking up the infastructure that organizes their suicide bombings

You hope...

It is currently at just under $200,000,000,000,

And could someone remind me of just how many "WMD's" we put out of action in return for that sum...?

Indeed. Much better than having them do it on our soil!

However, it would have been nice to allocate that $300,000,000,000 for more progressive purposes.

Yeah and last week I went into an old barn and smacked a hornet's nest so I could kill them there before they came into our neighborhood.

Someone should say that to the terrorists! They pissed America off! Except we aren't armed with little stingers, but with NUCLEAR FUCKING MISSLES! They sure are lucky we are humane, because if we had their fanaticism their entire sandbox would be a sheet of glass.
