Well I can tell you're in Florida!!
When I went looking for substrate, I saw so much cypress. You should do an experiment! I can tell you that palm tree wood is spectacular substrate for reishi, and that's available all over Fl, especially with the recent hurricanes.
I bet cypress works out, reishi seems to be so adaptable. I've seen RogerRabbit post that it grew on most everything he tried. Good luck, keep us posted.

Cypress trees grow in swamps. I asked the guys at home-depot if they were a conifer or a hardwood or what, and they were like "uhh... derrr.. they grow in swamps..."

Fucking people at home depot don't know fucking ANYTHING! None of the plants in their garden center are labled, and none of the employees knows anything about any of them... Pisses me off...

Anyways, I'd really like to do things right my first time instead of fucking things up by experimenting...

but I just now see a thread in the "Related threads" box called "using cypress".... so I'm going to check that out.

maybe I should PM RR...

Dude--call cabinet makers in your area.  That's what I did.  You can get LOADS of wood chips, planings, sawdust.  Just ask.  People ask for that stuff from them all the time for a variety of reasons.  The guy I went to was pretty cool--I told him a bit about reishi and how it grows and he helped me bag up 3 large trashbags full of the stuff...I've got tons now.  I might take him an antler once I've fruited just as a thank you.  They normally just toss the stuff.

i know, but I don't have a car! I can't drive around to all these places unless my roommate, in between school and work, finds it in his heart to chueffer my ass around town to find this shit, on the same SINGLE day out of the week that we are both not busy with our obligations...

the search is progressing though, slowly but surely.

RR said he has no idea about cypress.

just thought i'd throw this in, i went to a cypress clock shop today and asked if a cypress sheet would hold up well enough to build a guitar body from it and she said "no cypress is a very soft wood, the second softest next to balsa i believe" so according to the nutty ladies there cypress is a softwood. its very very light when dried but the logs there were covered in mold/fungi so i'd go for it anyways.

But under normal circumstances that soft wood isnt dense enough to retain the right amount of water and nutrition.

Why dont you go in the phone book call up a bunch of buisnesses, be it lubar yard, saw mill, or work shop and ask around to see if they have any good ole hardwood dust? Find the closest place and kick your buddy ten bucks to take you?
