Adding Water to Jars?
    #4736095 - 09/30/05 12:34 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Say someone had some pf style jars with dung instead of brf. After pressure cooking them to sterilize them they dry out too much after a few days. Not only that but the postal service made a sudden change in delivery time, leaving you with 3 days to go until your syringes arrive. If you've made some syringes (no spores in them) via the syringe tek, is there any reason why one couldn't re-hydrate their jars with these syringes and then just make new syringes later? Bear in mind that it is only boiled water in the syringes and spores have not been added yet. Does this sound like it would work, considering that these particular jars are shakeable?

What tek did you use? Because even if you had to wait for spores it shouldent dehydrate, even when the mycelium is growing if your jars were to dry out your mycelium would stop growing. So there has to be constant moisture. If the cakes are drying out now, even with spores it sounds to me as if they would still be drying out.

I just mixed a few teks together. I don't think I got the moisture content correct, that is why I was wondering if I could add a little with sterile water-only syringes instead of completely starting over and pressure cooking new substrate again.

Another question, if I've got jars that are too dry but are inoculated with spores, will the spores start up again if I add water to the jars or are the spores now dead?

About my tek, what I did was use roughly 50/50 horse shit and verm. I filled half pint jars 2/3 full and they have poly-fil filters in the middle of the lids for contam protection instead of a verm layer on top. This way I can shake the jars to make them colonize faster. I just tape 3 layers of tape over the inoculating holes after inoculation.

You could inject water to rehydrate the only problem is what happens when mycelium starts to form and the substrate drys out again? You would have to inject water into the mycelium. Now thats getting into uncharted teritory for me ive never injected anything into mycleium but it doesnt sound like a good idea you could even add too much water. But it may be worth a shot. Although i tihnk you'll have better results w/ regualr PF Jars.

So basically I have one more chance to get the water content correct? IOW, if I don't get it correct, mycelium starts growing and stops, I can't add more water because it will harm or kill the mycelium? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I understand what I'm doing.

I don't THINK the jars lose any moisture after I pc them, its just that I didn't get the moisture content right when I prepared them before PCing them. There is no sign of mycelium growing in my inoculated jars as of now and that is why I want to add water to try and get the moisture content correct so that the mycelium can colonize the jars.

As for my jars that I just got through sterilizing, they seem to have the right moisture content. My problem here is that I was supposed to get my syringes today but they have been rescheduled for delivery next week. I'll have to wait 3-5 more days before I can inoculate these jars so I hope that they will stay hydrated and not dry out.

I dont know if injecting in mycelium would hurt it but like i said i wouldnt think that it would be that great of an idea. Try to rehydrate and see what happens. When did you inoculate? And have you tried the PF Method yet? - The reason BRF is used in this method is that it contains nutrients the mycelium could use and the Verm. is to hold moisture. I know mycelim could grow on poo but i havent seen a tek for poo jars usuially you spawn to poo, which is basically letting exisitng mycelium feed on it then you would add a casing layer to protect from contams and it fruits through that.

Yeah, I've got some pf jars going right now but it has been like 24 days and they are only about 10% colonized. I read up on the "shakeable pf jar tek" in order to speed up colonization but I messed up with the water content. Had I not messed up the water content they would have already colonized about 30% at least because they would get more air and I could shake them. I inoculated the shakeable jars on 9/25 and they have shown no signs of colonizing so I know I need to add more water. I'll do that when I get home and I'll post results in a few days/weeks in this thread.

The reason I've been using poo instead of brf is that I have heard that it has more nutrients than brf.

Cool. As far as you PF Jars they dont sound like they are doing so good for 24 days. Are you heating your jars in any way? Or do they look dry? Because i made this same mistake. I was heating my jars slightly but when mycelium grows its creating heat so if you area is like 86 degrees the temp inside the jar is higher and will stall myceliual growth and possibly even dry your jars out.

Yes you can inject water. Better still inject a large amount of LC. I have RGS that is actually drier than when it went in, all of the moisture content will be supplied by a nice thick LC.

Temps are kept right at 80 degrees in a dark closet. I think these jars may be too wet because 4 of them look "solid" and have shown no signs of growth in that 24 days. I didn't realize that moisture content was difficult to get correct until I tried it. I would say that I've failed to get the moisture correct twice now, and possibly 3 times if these new jars dry out before my syringes arrive. Hopefully my plan to re-hydrate will work on the jars that I inoculated on 9/25 though. I'll start off only adding a little bit and shaking the jars until they look a little wetter so that I hopefully won't overdo it.

I'm sorry but what is LC? I'm normally good with abbreviations but I can't seem to figure this one out.
