Last season i ran into quite a few edibles while hunting for the more fun types of fungus and this season i wanted to try and maybe collect some and sell them to local restaraunts and farmers markets . I was wondering what kinda prices different edibles go for. I already have a couple people and the restaraunt where i work interested . Any help would be great.
Thanx guys!

If you have a whole foods market close to you, you can go check them out, when ever I,m there, I see that their prices range from $20.00- to $40.00 a pound, morels are in the $20.00, and those chantrells are the $40.00,s I think, way out of my range.

Damn, 40 dollars a pound! I work at a restaraunt and yesterday some guy came in with some Chicken of the Woods, a grocery sack with maybe 6-7 pounds, and we bought them for 15 dollars. So he ain't rich, but I'm sure he didn't work very hard for those. We are making a mock chicken and dumplings, or something like that.

Well, most stores only sell oysters, shiitake, ports, and white buttons. You won't find a lot of the wild mushroom species in stores.
The only one out of those that you may find in the wild are oysters. In my area, those go for about $8/lb.
It would be hard to price something like chicken mushrooms (sulfur shelf) or hen of the woods since you don't find those in normal stores. That is something you are going to have to price yourself, or possibly check local stores to see if they sell wild species to get a better idea.
even better yet, you can search the web and see what private sellers sell them for.

Does anyone know any good general areas to hunt chantrelles in Northern California? Mycoweb says to look by oak trees and along the coast but cali is pretty big, we were thinking of going to Point Reyes and checking the woodlands but i have no idea about the tree distrobution.

Hi Suimush,
Most of their field reports and forages state that they head to Sonoma county near the coastal hills and Salt Point a bit. Also Mt. Tamalpais has large stands of california live oak. Honestly though you should do pretty well in the east bay hills after a decent rain.

the erason for that is store liability and packaging, most stores wont buy mushrooms that arent cultivated from a reputable source, found mushrooms are treated as unsafe by most larger stores. the grocery stores in my area carry shiitaki, ports and buttons, I'm hard pressed to find oysters or anything else
