Boiling in water will work ok, just not as consistently.
A pressure cooker is really the answer. Guaranteed sterility and can be used for sterilizing your instruments, jars that had held contaminated cakes, you can even cook in it! And you can prolly pick one up for just a couple bucks at your local thrift store. Just make sure to check the seal and make sure it has the jiggler on top. If it doesn't and you can't find one, a shot glass will work ok.

i have been using a regular pot with a vegetable steamer insert (to keep the jars off the bottom) for all of my jars, and i haven't lost one to contamination, yet.

take care!
