Any other way?
    #4734213 - 09/30/05 12:46 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Is there any other way of using a submersible fish tank heater to incubate your jars? besides using a TIT? could i just fill a glass of water and stick it in the back of my desk and turn it on so it will warm the air?

maybe, won't be as good. Is your desk sealed off, free flow of air will cool it down.

It could work. I've tried it once, but it didn't work very well for me. I've heard of others having success using a method like that though.

please post the methods and concepts, i got out bid on the rheostat

And does anyone know if they sell lightdimmers at albertsons or sav-on drugs? If i had one of these i could just dim an incadescent light so its at 85 degrees

A light dimmer on a bulb gives constant power, your room will fluctuate during the day. This can be countered by heavy insulation of the incubation chamber.
To use the aq heater search for "heat bomb"

I've read of people filling a jar with water and using a heater in that and that can raise the temp to what is needed in the ambient air. But, if it's not sealed off, I can't imagine you're going to have very good results.

Plus the incadescent light will put off light. A no no for incubating.

you won't need a heat source unless the temps in the room drop below 70... if they do, a space heater to heat the entire room is the best option... putting direct heat right where the jars are will tend to dry them out while creating favorable conditions for contams...

You can put your jars in a box...
and stick them on top of your frig, freezer or hot water heater and it will work like an incubator.

But...I'd just make a TIT incubator...if I was you.
I have been using one for over 4 years and get really fast colonization.
