Or can I eat this one?

Surely looks like a shaggy mane. Look for extremely crowded gills and a hollow stem, usually with a "string" inside.

Yes it had both - very crowded white gills (no spores yet) and the stem was hollow all the way up with a soft fuzz in the middle.

I ate it, because I was pretty damn sure already. It tasted great with some butter/garlic and eggs

And I just noticed a second one popping up! Should be ready by tomorrow!

Yeah I've seen plenty of lepiota's around here (L. naucina) so I know what the differences there are.

There is no mushroom that you would be real likely to confuse with shaggy manes. I suppose a person could mistake a lepitota for one. There is at least one lepiota that is deadly, but it is a small mushroom. I guess it could be confused as a small Shaggy mane.

Is it safe to eat mushrooms growing in lawns? There are a bunch of the shaggy manes growing around my apartment complex, however, they routinely use chemical fertilizers on the turf. Would it be better to look in more natural areas where a chemical is not used as fertilizer?
