Pads vs. Filter Discs

This may sound stupid but.... Has anyone ever tried using sterile wound pads instead of micron filter discs??? I'm not suggesting gauze pads here, I'm suggesting the non-stick wound pads similar to the the kind found on band-aids...Aren't they designed to prevent bacteria and other contams from getting into the wound??? I was thinking of using either a large pad held on with a vented lid, or possibly even using those medicated band-aids to cover the holes in the vented lids (assuming I could get them tight enough)... What do ya think???

Dunno if it would work or not, I doubt it would work as good as filter patches. I use plastic lids with poly fil as a filter. I dunno why people don't hear about this tek that much. You just need a 1/4" hole in the center of your jar lids (preferably the plastic lids) and you stuff it with a little bit of poly fil. Poly fil is the polyester fiber that is used to stuff pillows and stuff. You can get a jumbo bag of it for about $2 at any *mart and it will last you quiet a while.

When do you need to stack your jars? I've always just PC'd with the amount of jars that my pressure cooker will hold in the bottom. Don't think I'm trying to go against filter disks MM, they're definately better than poly fil and I use them for filters in my chambers and plan on using them for colonization in my larger jars. I just think the poly fil tek is a nice tek to use for pint and half pint jars, its cheap and clean : )

Don't use sterile wound pads. Use "3M micropore surgical tape" to cover the holes in the lid. It allows air exchange, but keeps nasties out. The gum on the tape is waterproof. Using this tape allows you to stack the jars. You can buy the tape at chemists.
