Should I patch after first myc appearance??
    #4732874 - 09/29/05 05:36 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I was woundering if i should cover the parts of the myc that's grown first? I cased two jars in a 13x4x8 tray about 3 days ago and on the second day in the moring i say some myc coming through. i covered it with part of the peat/verm top and left it be. Should i keep doing this to let the myc catch up with itself or just let it go? I've heard something about this somewhere but i'm not sure what to do. I have the temp at like 70 degrees and about 95-96% RH i can't seam to get it to 100! How long would you think it will take the myc to colonize and start to pin? 2 weeks or what. Thanks For Any Help!

You don't want 100% for cased substrates. 70 to 80% is correct. Personally, I never patch. Try to get the casing layer even, then just let it go. Patching is known to give a more even pinset, but is certainly optional, not required.

I've heard that 100% for incubating and then drop it to 70-80% for pinning. I think your wrong on that one but I won't cover anyymore.

RR is right you are wrong. you don't need 100% humidity for cased substrates. not even for colonization, hell i don't use an incubator for colonizing my bulk substrates. once you go to fruiting then your humidity should be 90-95% until pinning begins and then dropped to 85-90%.
best of luck to ya frf.

Okay then i'll just cover it for week or so and mist it when it needs it. How does that sound?

No, you should not continue patching until the mycelium "catches up with itself". Doing this would most likely lead to overlay. The basic idea is that you incubate until you see a little mycelium coming up through the casing layer, then patch, then birth.

In terms of relative humidity, you shouldn't be having to add any moisture during the incubation period, as your tray is covered and very little evaporation is taking place. You don't want the casing layer to get too wet.

After birth, the mycelium will continue to strengthen, and colonize the casing layer. You can start misting then. You want the casing layer to be moist, but not over-saturated. In my personal experience (with mostly cased PF jars), pinning takes about a week; (but that is by no means an average--just a ballpark). After pinning begins, you can stop misting, or mist just a little bit since the mycelium should have just about the right amount of moisture to fruit successfully.

Primordia proliferates in the humid pockets of the casings surface so high RH is needed also as important is transpiration which also aids in pin development, 100% RH will inhibit this slightly so anywhere between 95-100% is optimal for pinning. I do patch because those early breakthroughs will often prematurely pin stealing the first true flushes energy leaving you often times with a weak first flush. Once your casing tek improves and is done properly then patching will be need less to not at all. Read my pinning strategy for insight. GL
