If you did attempt to do something and were unsucessful you still did not do it, but that is not the same as not even making an attempt. So saying you tried is still just as real as saying you did not do it (they mean the same thing but tried means a little more).

Gomp, I would like to see you pole vault 30 feet in the air, without many attempts aka trying.
