Help Wanted: US Border Protection Chief

U.S. border protection chief resigns

Thursday, September 29, 2005; Posted: 11:15 a.m. EDT (15:15 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The commissioner for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Robert C. Bonner, said Wednesday that he will retire.

He and the Bush administration have been at odds over his support for using civilian "minutemen" along the U.S.-Mexico border to assist border patrol agents. President Bush has equated the self-proclaimed volunteer group with "vigilantes."

Bonner told CNN on Wednesday that he was not asked to resign. He told reporters that it was "just time."

"I mean, I didn't come back here to serve a life tenure," he told reporters. "I came back to serve. And I have put in four solid years. I think I've done my duty, and it's a good time to move on."

He notified President Bush of his plans earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security said in a written statement.

"Rob Bonner has been an integral part of the Department of Homeland Security leadership team since its inception," said his boss, Michael Chertoff, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

"I've known Rob for many years; he is an outstanding public servant and will be greatly missed here at the department. I appreciate the commitment and service he has shown in directing our border security efforts," Chertoff said.

Bonner was sworn in as commissioner of U.S. Customs less than two weeks after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. During his tenure the agency had a key role in the war on terror.

His departure will leave three top positions within the department vacant: the chiefs of Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

It was during his tenure that the three separate agencies, with its 42,000 employees, merged into the Department of Homeland Security when it was formed in 2003.

Meanwhile, high rates of illegal immigration prompted the governors of Arizona and New Mexico this year to declare states of emergency along their borders.

Bonner's last day has been unspecified to allow for a smooth transition.

If ever an appointee was to be put through the wringer, it's the one for this position.

It won't happen of course but it sure would be swell. Unfortunately neither side is willing to upset the balance.

This would be a perfect oppourtunity though for either Dems or Reps to decidely seize the upper hand in political clout. If the Libertarians would rethink their position on immigration they could make enourmous strides in the political arena. I think even as recognized a problem as illegal immigration is, it's importance to the American people is underestimated.

Here in Houston even with the high percentage of illegals, you'd be amazed at how many Latino's who are here legaly want it addressed.

The Bush administration is asleep at the wheel on the illegal immigration issue. But then there is an unholy alliance of big business wanting cheap cowed labor, socialists wanting as many people as possible on the dole and casting votes for their politicians regardless of their status as citizens, and the large Mexican contingent which is enamored with 'reconquista.'

The Bush administratin isnt asleep at the wheel. They are doing everything they can to make sure illegals continue to cross the border.
In addition to bad mouthing the minute men who are helping to patrol the border by calling them 'vigilantes' instead of 'patriots'...bush told congress last year he would work with them this year on the border situation...not holding my breath. There are also otehr things which ppl in border patrol have been asked to do which are so absurd ppl wouldnt believe them.
Do your own research if you care about america.

Bush needs to read the Constitution about ten more times. When law enforcement fails or is unable to do their job, it's the job of the citizenry, the un-offical militia, to do it for them.

Bush realizes the impact of letting illegals in, somehow all of the legals here will support him in this act and he/his party gets more votes. I almost would guarantee you that if I were made the Chief of Border Patrol, no more than 10 would make it across the border illegally each year.

Not too much of a budget, really.  All of those volunteers would be subsidized.  Each illegal that they turned in would get them a one thousand dollar reward.  That should be enough to keep them in business down there.  I'd just need a jeep for each 25 miles and three men inside.  Of course, the "BIG GIANT FENCE" would help too.  Especially if we had TWO fences with landmines in between

The only thing about the Minutemen thing that I worry
about is that it gets out of hand and something bad
happens.

Plenty of folks have gone on ride-alongs and said clearly
that they are lawful and not hot heads, but still...
a coyote with a gun could make for a dangerous patrol.

One coyote with a gun wouldn't compare to three trained men.

Here is how I'd set it up, in the ideal situation. Anyone who was bringing people across as a coyote and was armed would be shot on the spot. Any illegals coming across would be captured, locked in a van all day, then at the end of the day taken to a INS station and paid their 1,000$ reward for each illegal and the body of an armed coyote. The illegals would have a tattoo or a brand put on them that would identify them as "first timers". If they got caught again, they'd be shot.

It should be a SERIOUS crime to try to enter the US illegaly. I'm talking death penality serious.

Invading a foreign country? If someone comes across our borders illegally armed, I'd see it as an invasion.

Since the government clearly isn't bothered by putting up a fence to keep illegals out, they need to have very swift, severe punishments for breaking that law.

I thought you were talking about all illegals, not just armed ones. I'm not sure I'd call an unarmed civilian an "invader."

I'm cool with punishing it, but death? I'm sorry, but the death penalty, if used at all, should only be applied to crimes that involve killing someone.

someone said "The only thing about the Minutemen thing that I worry
about is that it gets out of hand and something bad
happens."

I am not worried about that at all. I am actually expecting it at some point in time. As much as the administration and big business hate the minute men, they will probably plant somebody into the group to do just that. or it could just happen.
What we should be worrying about is all these ppl invading our country. I know there is one gang mostly compried of illegals in america that has about 30k ppl in it. Fcking sht...drug dealing, killing, and the like.

Ppl need to get angry about this and fast.

I wish i lived near the border...i would volunteer for a night shift.

This is exactly why we don't need vigilante idiots roaming the countryside with guns.

This is a perfect example of people taking media lies WAY to seriously. This is why Bush will not support them, there is in reality no fucking need. But if he admitted there was no need, instead of condemning these morons, part of the tangle of lies would become more apparent.

I mean fuck if we killed every illegal Mexican immigrant, (I know this is the other boarder, but still) it would basically amount to genocide.

Preventing people from entering the USA illegaly, with no paperwok or background, isn't "serious"? Wait until the next attack occurs and it's from mid-eastern men who were smuggled in via Mexico.

It's serious enough to warrant a trial, maybe even jail time, but not execution.

I don't like boarders period.

I really hate them actually.

It's like you're born here, so this government OWNS YOU. Now, pay all the money they want you too, even if it is used to fucking oppress you. Want to just leave? Too bad. Now you have to pay off other governments just to get the 'right' to live somewhere else, if you're government LETS YOU...

The whole system is very very stupid. People should be able to live where they want. Governments should be in control of MUCH LESS.

But then again in the broad spectrum of politics, (left and right) I am the guy in the woods 15 miles away tripping alone.

No. I don't think the boarder needs to be strengthened.

"Patriot: he who hollers the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about." -- Mark Twain

"Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear... kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor... with the cry of grave national emergency. Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it..." -- General Douglas MacArthur (1957)

The only time that jail works is when prison is worse than your current situation. Coming into America and being caught would give them a guaranteed, say, year of free medical care, free food, easy living and a roof over their head. Thats not even punishment. We need to either put up a fence and have it patrolled or have serious penalties for people who violate our soverignity.
