i tried grape nuts once.

i was trying to see if i could add enough moisture straight into the sterrilized bag with out contaminating anything, then put it back in the box for the myc to grow. i exploded 2 full boxes of grapenuts all over my room, but i got the third one to work how i wanted.

the myc ate it up...quickly but i lost my work when the setup i built in my apartment dried out.

i imagine cheerios would work fine. no promises though

You're still going to need vermiculite or something to retain water if you are planning on growing from cakes. otherwise you will be REAL disappointed with the results.

I tried it, the cheerios melted when I PCd my jars.  At first, mycelium was spreading over the jars nicely.  However, yesterday I saw the dreaded black mold on both of them. :frown:.  I opened one of the jars and it also had cobweb mold all over the top.  When I did these two jars I also did two standard BRF+VERM and they are going nicely still.

Edit:

I soaked the cheerios in water, and used verm to hopefully keep it together.  As I said though, the cheerios melted and it looked very messy in the jars :frown:

dont soak the cheerios like that one guy if you try it. id grind down the oatmeal and cheerios add some brf and a little bit of verm. then mix in just enough water and try it. because i bet it can be done, if you do it right.

I don't think it'll work, the cheerios get sticky when heated

Any info. how you prepared the cheerios? Did you crush them? I think my jars got contaminated because there was too much water. Maybe if you powdered the cheerios and used that like you would BRF, it might work. Although the jars got contaminated, they were growing much faster than my BRF jars that I innoc'd at the same time.

I just mixed some cheerios, soy beans nuts, and brown rice in a bowl with water.  Didnt break tha cheerios up or anything.  Then I microwaved it to sterilize it... (read somewhere on this site that this is a questionable technique ... tried to find it again, but cant so i cant show u tha link).

Like I said this prolly has like a 5% chance of working out (actually I didnt say that yet..)  But I was just in a hurry and needed something to do and this came to mind so I did tha best i could with what i got here in tha house.  Anyways,,, what was a saying??      :mushroomgrow:

I cant imagine there is enough nutes to get potent fruits off of it.

this kinda boogles me...Wbs is WAY cheaper then cheerios by mass and volume. Cheerios go soggy before you even finish a bowl.
